Did anyone notice Gabbard being pulled from the game twice in the first 3 minutes for missing a shot?....For how talented he is I just couldn't believe that.

Trying to be aggressive and make things happen and you get pulled. I'd be tentative to shoot the ball later on in the game also.

 

I will join in on the speculation with you here, because neither of us likely knows the real reason he was pulled. I would be shocked if he were pulled just because he missed a shot. Maybe he was pulled because he took a bad shot. Maybe he was pulled because coach said no shots except layups before 5 passes on this play. Maybe coach told him to run a play and then he ran the play wrong. I guarantee you he wasn't pulled just because he missed a shot.

 

I coached my team the other night and I called a timeout the second time my team went down the floor on offense and YELLED at them to get over here. Now, I am sure no one in the gym knew what was going on besides me and my team. The fans there probably were looking at each other and saying what the heck?!? The problem was we had been focusing on our man offense the last 4 practices. Then the first two times down the floor they looked clueless and weren't even lined up right to start a play, let alone run it right. After the timeout, we get lined up right, run the offense and get a layup out of it. Now the boys are focused and know the offense works if they run it. The point is, only Gabbard and his coach know why he sat after those shots and I would bet there was a very good reason for it.

I sense some that there may be some confusion on some of the players' parts sometimes as to why they are pulled, or maybe frustration with the system they are are being asked to run. Just an observation. Again, could be a communication issue.

This is a big win for Coach Schlarman and the boys, congratulations.

This team has not been together for a while. I think that the coaches, players and parents will tell you that this team has not been together for the past couple of years. I don't believe they will ever be on the same page again. The players have lost faith in the coaching staff a long time ago.

 

This team can not execute the plan because there is no plan!!

 

The biggest part of coaching is the ability to bring players together, manage egos and get everything going in the proper direction and that has not happened at Boone.

 

Guys- I got no dog in this fight at all but I look at 21-8 last year and 10-3 this year so far and I find it hard to believe that a coach doesn't get more credit for the 3 out of every 4 wins that he gets. That is a along the lines of Rick Pitino's record. Lost faith? Manage egos- give me a break. Maybe somebody is in their ear telling them not to have faith-based on this thread, I see quite a few candidates.

 

As to AAU ball, no defense, less refereeing, players running up and down the floor trying to impress the college coaches. Players trying to be the next And 1 player. No education requirements. Some players excel at the lack of discipline- some players transfer.

My final point has to do with the comment "to get everybody going in the right direction." I strongly agree with any coach trying to do this. Coach John L Smith had his famous "boat speech" -either you're in the boat or out of the boat. Sounds like Boone Co. has a bunch of swimmers around the program from this vantage point. "It hasn't happened at Boone." Because they lost to Highlands? Every single comment that keeps telling them that keeps them further apart. I'd say get behind your coach now because you have a shot at winning this year.

If one is a coach, you can't let fans/parents opinions bother you. It sounds like Boone has a lot of passionate fans, which is a not all bad.

 

I disagree that good defense is not played in AAU ball. Some players play very good defense, and that is where college scholarships are earned, not in school ball.

 

A mid-season, non-district game doesn't mean a lot by itself. Hopefully, Boone will buck the trend of the last few years of peaking too early and being upset in the key district games despite having a good overall record. They have had a very good record the last 3 years, but zero wins in the district tournament.

 

In the end, people remember the champs and possibly runners up and tournament contenders, not the teams who just have a good regular season record.

 

You could even give the Holmes boys to just about any coach around, and they would have a good record, but they might not necessarily win all of the key games.
