This was a very physical game and the officiating was the worst I have seen in a very long time. That doesn't take away the fact that Boone shot around 28%, had too many turnovers and allowed too many second and third chances on the offensive boards. They stood around a lot and did not get after the basketball on loose balls. They are not excecuting fundamental basketball: move the ball up the court quickly, limit turnovers by making good passes and coming to the basketball, follow your shot, block out first, then rebound, get on the floor when there is a loose ball, play in your face defense and pass the ball quickly on offense, there are five really good players on the court at any given time, use them. It was frustrating to watch.

 

Highlands got after it last night. They moved the ball up the court quickly when Boone ran the full court press and passed the ball quickly on offense, creating the open shot. Highlands was the better team last night, and I do believe that on another night Boone could come out on top-they need to work on being more consistent as individuals and as a team.

 

I agree with everything but this statement. Shields called a tight game at first but lightened up and Ohara who is one of the best knew when to blow and when not to. They both passed on several fouls that could have been called on both teams. All in all I thought they did an admirable job.

We had to get an officiating comment in there somewhere! It wouldn't be a legitimate high school basketball discussion unless someone complained about an official or a call. LOL

This team has not been together for a while. I think that the coaches, players and parents will tell you that this team has not been together for the past couple of years. I don't believe they will ever be on the same page again. The players have lost faith in the coaching staff a long time ago.

 

This team can not execute the plan because there is no plan!!

 

The biggest part of coaching is the ability to bring players together, manage egos and get everything going in the proper direction and that has not happened at Boone.

 

 

This is part of the problem (s) that we discussed in the Girls' forum on "Open Practices". Obviously, coach has an uphill road ahead bu IMO the politics that he's facing now may be the biggest obstacle...

Did anyone notice Gabbard being pulled from the game twice in the first 3 minutes for missing a shot?....For how talented he is I just couldn't believe that.

Trying to be aggressive and make things happen and you get pulled. I'd be tentative to shoot the ball later on in the game also.

I think you both may be unclear on my feelings toward Willie. I never once said I didn't like him. I personally like the guy and think he's a great coach, but was simply replying to the comment where someone said that Highlands has a great coaching staff and pointing out that is a topic that gets mixed feelings from some of the folks in the Ft. T community for reasons I rather not get in to, to keep this from turning in to a Covcath/Brossart type thread because Willie doesn't deserve that... and you can ask Qryche, I'm one of the biggest Highlands supporters out there.

I commend you for not posting any disagreements you have with how Willie runs his program. If your disagreements are strong enough to post them here, they should be strong enough for you to address courteously with Willie or the Admin.

 

I don't agree with everything Willie does. But he's the head coach, so he calls the shots. And he's doing a pretty good job in my opinion. Plus he's a class act as a person.

I've noticed that when players miss a shot (e.g., an open three pointer, make a turnover, or some other mistake, they are often pulled right away). I think it's hard for players to get into a flow, and they become more tentative.

I think this thread has run its course. This was a great game for the Bird fans and a bad game for the BC fans. These two teams may meet again in the 9th Region Tourney and then we can start it all back up.

You have to let Mikey play and create. He is a nice player and a very unselfish player and could really help this team get to the next level.

 

He is being held back by this coaching staff and for the third straight year his confidence has been crushed.

Congrats Birds!!! You are impressive considering there won't be any Senior Night this year.

 

You are a special group... People don't consider the basketball IQ, the unselfish teamwork, the sticky defense, determination, and the coachability of your team and did I mention all Juniors. Most haven't had the pleasure of seeing you perform.

 

Coach Willie has GOT TO BE LOV'IN IT!!! The rest of this season and all of next 2010.

 

I hear they're planning on making a run at Holmes next year being how most have already crowned Holmes 9th Region Champs this season.

 

Here's their body of work so far: record of 12-3; they beat defending state champs Mason Co. on their home court ranked 8th in the state at the time; lost by 3 to a very good Madison Central ask J-Town after leading entirely the whole game; beat 20th ranked Boone Co. (BGP poll).

 

I hope we can keep this thread about the teams whether you're a Boone or a Birds fan.

 

Both teams have some of the best talent around. I'm a little disappointed that some are taking shots at the coaches. I think the Boone kids would agree that they got outplayed in this game and I think the Highlands kids would give alot of credit to the Boone kids for their hustle and effort. It was a very competitive game regardless of the score...

 

The bottom line is that all these kids will be better players from this experience.

 

Congratulations to BOTH TEAMS!!! It was well worth the $5.00
