Just a few thoughts!

 

• Holmes seems to play to the competition which has to be tough on Coach Henley
  
• When they decide to turn it on, particularly on defense, the game is over especially against NKY teams (ie: against St. Henry when it was a 2 point game in the third quarter)
  
• Pittman did get double teamed many times but he just couldn't handle the ball, tonight pressure or not. It was almost comical at times.
  

 

Anyone who caught the ball inside for Holmes got double teamed. They help out in the post. It's not like they were chasing Pittman and doubling him all over.

Just got in from the game. Game wasn't as close at the final might sound.

 

Holmes jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and then HC started to slow the game down as they realized they couldn't run with Holmes or they'd be out of it by halftime. HC was down 11-3 with a little over a minute left. Holmes scored on a nice drive and bucket by Riley and then HC scored their first field goal of the game to end the first at 13-5 Holmes. Rico had 6, Riley 5, and JJ 2. Giwa had 3 for HC, all on free throws.

 

I have a feeling they didn't just figure that out during the game...First, that's how they have played every game this year, second, that's probably most teams game plan playing Holmes.

 

Second quarter, Holmes dictated the pace and held a 10+ lead throughout the quarter. Riley led Holmes in the first half with 11 points. Very boring game to watch with HC trying to slow the game because Holmes held a significant height advantage. Score was 29-14 at the half after Slusher of Holmes got a tip in at the buzzer. Pittman had ZERO points and was double and triple teams anytime he touched the ball.

 

I don't recall Holmes ever really controlling the pace. If anything, Holy Cross controlled the pace, and didn't let Holmes run out like they want.

 

Holy Cross' bigs did a great job defending Pittman the entire game who could very well could have gotten fouled out with offensive fouls that weren't called, but i guess that's what this rivalry is.

Third quarter HC actually played well and won the quarter 17-11 behind four 3 pointers. Holmes played very sloppy and the refs tried to dictate the pace of the game. The woman referee was absolutely horrible both ways. Holmes took a 40-31 lead in to the fourth quarter.

 

Yeah it was ONLY Holmes playing sloppy:rolleyes:. How so did the refs try to dictate the pace of the game? Yes the woman ref must have had an off night or something...

 

Fourth quarter Holmes got their act together and built a 19 point lead with 3 minutes left in the game. Henley started subbing at this point and we'd see the JV the rest of the way. Holmes led 55-38 with 10 second left and HC hit a 3 to give you the final of 55-41.

 

Actually I do remember Holy Cross starting to sub their jv in around 1:30 left which then led to Henley throwing his in as well.

 

Overall a pretty boring game to watch as HC played stall ball the WHOLE GAME. Riley led all scorers with I believe 17 or 18 points. Pittman finished with 7. I believe Rico finished in double figures as well. Not sure why, but Arnold didn't play at all tonight for Holmes.

 

I wouldn't call it stall ball at all. They are running offense despite the long possessions.(it's actually there style of play believe it or not)

 

Overall, Holy Cross was a better shooting 1st quarter, and a couple breaks going their way, away from making this game go down to the wire. Props to all Holmes players contributing to their win tonight. With Pittman not being much of a factor, it really showed how ALL their players can play, and it's great how they all have 3pt. range to go along with their great athleticism(amazing combination of talents).[/i]

Arnold was sitting this evening due to attitude. He is the one player that I believe can help this team a great deal down the road if he decides to let physical bumps by opposing players and calls against him go. Hopefully maturity will help with this...if not, I am sure his playing time will diminish greatly at the varsity level.

Yeah, Holy Cross played bad and still held it to 14 @ Holmes who is in my opinion the best team in the state. As you said it was within 9 in the 4th. Also Giwa had a sprained ankle and IMO was not even close to 100%. He is a lot quicker than that and quicker than anyone Holmes could put on him.

HC did NOT play "stall ball". They were patient on offense period. Holmes was probably MORE patient on offense than HC. In fact, if they had a stat for "time of possession", I would bet it was pretty even tonight. Holmes didn't run and gun at all. They didn't press the whole game and it was almost like they wanted to see how they could handle a slower game pace in case they are forced to play that style somewhere down the road this year.

BTW the game was as close as the score indicated. It was not a blowout by any means. The 14 point margin was about right for how this game played out.

I guess I need to quit predicting scores.

Yeah 57 to 12 wasn't the best prediction.

I agree, Hc was down nine in the fourth with the ball, but had a costly turnover that led to a Bulldog three. HC set the tempo the whole game and played the #1 team in the state to a pretty good game.

I am a Holmes alum, and I agree. Like I said, If Henley doesn't start going for the juggerler, it's going to cost them. Seems the Holmes players are getting a little bored with this Offense. There is such a thing as good half court O, but it's getting rediculous. These guys need to play a liitle more up tempo, thats their style.

I think this game along with the Conner and St. Henry games show that Holmes isn't going to beat every 9th region team by 20-30 like some have said. Don't get me wrong they are a very good ball club but I don't think they will go unbeaten in the 9th as it is very tough to do.

Anyone who has seen them more than once (which I'm going to assume the majority hasn't) knows they were horrible handling the ball tonight, Pittman in particular. They also had I believe 4 straight possessions where they had offensive fouls/violations called on them (with a 16 point lead) which allowed HC to close within 9.

 

Also I wouldn't be so sure that Giwa is a lot quicker than anyone that Holmes could put on him. How many of his points came off of free throws? I know for a fact his first 7 did. The HC coach had to make a switch defensively because he couldn't guard Riley early on.

When the two JV teams were in HC hit a three, that was the only points scored. HC had their JV team in first.
