"Face of the Program"

Featured Replies

Somebody has to throw Dicky Beal's name in the mix for Holmes. For most people around the state, he is the one guy identified with Holmes basketball, probably mostly because of his career at UK. He still spends a lot of time signing autographs and having his picture taken when he's at a game. Plus, I thought he was the most entertaining high school basketball player I have ever seen.

With respect to coaches at Holmes, I think Dave Henley is well on his way to establishing his as the "face of the program", but with all due respect to Reynolds Flynn, for anyone over 50 the face of Holmes athletics will always be Tom Ellis, who the Fieldhouse is named after.

And, for what its worth, I admire Fr. Heile as the proposed "face of the program" at Cov. Latin, but if you travel around the state (or country), for those few that are even aware of Covington Latin, the one guy they will know is David Justice, all star outfielder and ex of Halle Berry. (Of course, using this criteria, George Clooney probably becomes the face of Augusta, and that is just wrong on so many levels).

The Fieldhouse is named after David M Evans....I thinkhe may have been the superintendent when built.

Football field is named after Ellis.

Maysville High School - Earle Jones.

IMO Danny Weddle voice of the Mason County Royals instead of the face.

Couldn't agree with you more on this one! Danny does a great job.

Was in the old Maysville gym a few weeks ago....brought back some great memories of Holmes and Maysville going at it. Wooden rafters in the roof...neat place.

Still a good place to watch a game; Lady Royals play there now as you probably know. I don't get there as often as I should, but it seems like every game I do catch; it's a great atmosphere.

A bit off topic; but several years ago mcmama was working at the nursing home here in Maysville and Mr. Jones was residing there. She organized a "Maysville-Mason County Alumni" basketball game in Mr. Jones' honor; it was a pretty neat event.

Face of Montgomery Co:

Good catch LABS. I stand corrected.

Clay Eifert....successful two-sport athlete, successful coach...think he may even be the principal now.

He is the principal now.

As TheOldGuy stated, there are 4 very good choices for Covington Catholic.

He included Coach Lynn Ray - that's a no doubter for the football program; however, since this is the basketball thread, I'd like to replace Coach Ray with Mr. Romes.

Mr. Romes is an outstanding man who has been a huge part of Covington Catholic games. You'd always see him standing underneath the basket when you walk in, collecting tickets. And, for those of you who were / are a little closer to the program, you'd see him every Thursday at Bingo.

Mote Hils is the most successful coach at Covington Catholic.

Dan Tieman was a great player and a coach who was there for a long time. He's still there, and has over 40 years of experience at CCH.

And you can't leave out Jack Kaelin, who has been at CCH for over 40 years (same as Tieman) and made the freshman regional tournament into what it is today.

Harrison County- Mike Rietz or Mac Whitaker

Ben Pumphrey is a guy who put his face on a lot of programs. He is probably the face of the 10th region!

I agree with Jamie Walz for girls basketball...but when it comes to boy's basketball it's hands down Scott Draud when it comes to players.

What about Neltner for Highlands, didnt he win Mr. Kentucky Basketball? I know Draud is probably the best player to come through there but I think you could make a strong case for Neltner and Derek Smith.
