For me it's John Wimzie. He is still there after all these years.

Wimzie has indeed been apart of the program for A LONG TIME as both a player and coach.

 

When looking at it though, Coach Henley and Flynn were the ones who changed the face of Holmes basketball. Flynn instituted a fast paced run and gun offensive style and Henley incorporated the tough defensive mindset that is now a stamp of Holmes basketball.

Derek may be the best athlete to ever come out of HHS but if you would have watched Scott Draud play the game you would change your pick. In fact, Jamie Walz probably deserves it more than anyone as she has her shoes, jersey, etc in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

 

I agree with Jamie Walz for girls basketball...but when it comes to boy's basketball it's hands down Scott Draud when it comes to players.

For Holmes I always think of Dickie Beal.

Somebody has to throw Dicky Beal's name in the mix for Holmes. For most people around the state, he is the one guy identified with Holmes basketball, probably mostly because of his career at UK. He still spends a lot of time signing autographs and having his picture taken when he's at a game. Plus, I thought he was the most entertaining high school basketball player I have ever seen.

 

With respect to coaches at Holmes, I think Dave Henley is well on his way to establishing his as the "face of the program", but with all due respect to Reynolds Flynn, for anyone over 50 the face of Holmes athletics will always be Tom Ellis, who the Fieldhouse is named after.

 

And, for what its worth, I admire Fr. Heile as the proposed "face of the program" at Cov. Latin, but if you travel around the state (or country), for those few that are even aware of Covington Latin, the one guy they will know is David Justice, all star outfielder and ex of Halle Berry. (Of course, using this criteria, George Clooney probably becomes the face of Augusta, and that is just wrong on so many levels).

Holmes:

Coach: Reynolds Flynn/Dave Henley

Player: Doug Schloemer (Only player to ever win Mr. Basketball at Holmes..has jersey hanging in the fieldhouse)

 

I'd go with Dicky Beal who SHOULD have won Mr Basketball in 1980 but writers were fascinated with Ervin Stepp.

You could also say Doug Schloemer, the only nky player to win Mr. Kentucky basketball until Ross Neltner. Doug took Holmes to the finals and won until the refs blew it and didn't call the goaltending.

Obviously you are closer to the Holmes program than most people. I think, in order to be The Face of the Program, it should be someone who is recognized by the most people. That is why I chose Dicky Beal.

Fr. Heile is CLS sports and Justice is the most recognizable name from CLS history but the best basketball player is definitely Brian O'Conner. He is still #1 in rebounding and #2 in scoring all time for Thomas More College almost 30 years after he played there and he played pro basketball in Europe and in the CBA.

O'Connor occurred to me, and I was aware of his success at Thomas More, but Justice's numbers at Cov. Latin (about 27PPG) on a team that was almost .500 are decent credentials to be the "face of the program", whatever that means. Still, having said that, I think the argument for O'Connor is there, too. (I find it almost unbelievable that I am debating who the face of the Cov. Latin program is)
