As a new member of the Bluegrass forum I can tell you that you all need to appreciate what you have with this Holmes team whether or not you are a fan of the "Dogs" or not. This team can and will probably be something special come March. Of course there is always the possibility that depth, injuries, internal problems, eligibility and the likes could slow them down. They will also have a bullseye on them every week when they take the floor. That comes with the territory. I have been around and seen the great teams in the 9th region all the way back to the mid 60s and I can tell you there are always going to be bumps in the road. There have only been 2 teams in the history of the 9th region go undefeated against the 9th; Holmes 1978 and the CCH team from a few years ago, (sorry can't remember the year). The 9th region is and always has been one of the toughest in the state. Games like tonight only tend to make teams stronger. I would hate to be in Henderson County's shoes on Tuesday. It could be ugly!!!! If I were David Henley games like this would make me very happy as I could use it to motivate a team that is clearly heads above its competition on most every night it takes the court and clearly feels they are the best in the state. They read and hear the same things you guys are reading and hearing every day. Nothing like a slap of reality to make you realize that you are not as invinceable as you think you are. Like I said enjoy the ride, it could be a very nice one and could result in the only 9th region state championship since 1984. That's way too long to wait for a second.

Holmes boys’ basketball coach David Henley liked the way his team dealt with adversity during a 53-46 win over Conner in the semifinals of the Lloyd Memorial Invitational on Monday in Erlanger.

 

Conner took a 23-21 halftime lead and stayed on top for most of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs buckled down and came away with the victory.

 

“They hung in there,” Henley said of his players’ perseverance. “They could have hung their heads and said, ‘This isn’t our night,’ but they didn’t.”

I think more than that this just shows its still highschool basketball, kids are not very consistent and when someone has an off night this is what happens. Im willing to bet this won't be the last scare Holmes sees this year, but they did what good teams do and pulled it out.

 

You hit it right on the head. I'm always amazed - every year - when the "can't miss" predictions come out, as they always do. There's no such thing as a "can't miss" team when you're dealing with 14-18 year olds...

I'd be willing to bet Henley doesn't care about the rankings right now, but does care about preparing his team for tournament time. Having said that, Holmes could've sat back in a zone with Pittman in the middle and had an easier time with Connor. Connor isn't the type of team that's going to shoot the lights out and the Holmes' guards are quick enough to defend out top on a zone. By playing a m2m, it'll help Holmes down the road.

 

Also, Hicks had a great game plan. His team played great m2m team defense. He's not only a top coach in the 9th, but I'd even submit he's one of the top coachs in the state.

Thanks ER you always come through when the Holmes bashers come calling. I know all the kids for Holmes and I'm related to 3 of the varsity players. I have been a Holmes fan since I was 9 or 10 when Jack Jennings was playing. In 18 or 19 seasons of watching Bulldog baketball I have never been more proud of the dogs in my life, as I am right now. Not just for what they do on the court but what they do off the court. These young man have set the mode for the youth in the inner city of Covington. They are becoming leaders in there community. As stated in other threads these kids have a unfair amount of pressure on them, and the continue to step up. Not only on the court but off the court as well. My son loves them and they motivate him as well as other kids in the inner city of Covington. What they are doing is simply amazing. Also a big thanks to Henley for leading these young men and keeping them grounded.:thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

 

You hit the nail on the head! I had the priviledge of meeting 4-5 of these Holmes boys over the summer, and they were extremely polite and respectful. I coach some kids over the summer, and they came to some practices and really tried to help some of the younger kids. They set a great example of sportsmanship and teamwork, as well as how to play the game the right way. I can teach this to my younger kids until I am blue in the face, but when they saw these kids who were as talented as they come, in the gym playing together, it changed the atmosphere completely. The unselfishness and comraderie of these players was amazing. Many of my younger players can be spotted at some of the Holmes games and have become lifelong fans and have benefitted greatly from knowing these Holmes players. I wish nothing but the best for the Holmes boys because they absolutely deserve it!

The reason I asked was because in the 4th Holmes showed the reason why the are one of the top teams in the state and you had to be there to truely understand how the game went. I know, that you know, the score does not always tell the whole story. Nothing was going these kids way yesterday they couldn't buy a shot. They could of easily gave up, but they choose to scrap it out. They showed gritt and heart. Ricardo is a leader he willed them to a win. I think this win goes directly to Henley. He knows his team will have off shooting nights, but he has them playing defense night in and night out. There defense is becoming the staple of this team.

These type of games occur during the course of a season at EVERY level of basketball. I would not be surprised at all to see Holmes roll Conner by 20+ in the rematch. It is kinda ironic about the game starting with the T and Conner ball, then Holmes playing their worst game of the year. Conner just had that happen to them vs. Ryle and played their worst game of the year and Ryle won by 25+. And, just like in this rematch, don't expect to see similar results when Ryle and Conner get together again. Always remember to judge teams by their body of work over the course of a season, not by a single game and never use comparative scores. Holmes is the #1 team in KY right now IMHO and hats off to Conner for playing a very good game. But, the W, not the margin of victory, is all that will be remembered in the long run. Congrats to Holmes on winning on an off night.
