December 21, 200817 yr I just saw the Holiday schedule for my work a few minutes ago. I have to work Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, again. :irked::madman: This will make the 4th Christmas that I have worked. And to make matters worse, since we are short handed, I may have to stay over for 16 hours because I won't have anyone to relieve me at the end of my shift. Is anyone else going to be working over the Holidays, or will I be on BGP posting to myself, lol.
December 21, 200817 yr We usually do X-Mas eve with my Dad but we are doing it today instead so I might be around. I do have to work on Christmas Eve till 1 so it's not to bad.
December 21, 200817 yr Not working, but I'll be posting. It will be one of my last days on BGP before I leave for Israel for 10 days.

Fortunately through seniority and promotions I've been able to avoid working the Holidays recently. However, in these economic time I'm happy to hear your employed.

However, in these economic time I'm happy to hear your employed. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for my job, but as I said this is the 4th Christmas in a row that I have worked. What makes it worse is that I have 4 vacation days left for this year but my boss said that since we are so short handed I can't take them. He followed this with an e-mail that said we had to work, but he would be on vacation, and have a merry Christmas. :fight:
December 22, 200817 yr I'll be working 6:30am-5 or 6pm on Christmas Day. I am off on Christmas Eve though. I'm sorry you have to work both! I remember when I was little, my Dad always worked Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Since I've always had to work on Christmas, and my ex always had them for Christmas Day and the several days after, my kids and I developed a tradition of celebrating Christmas on a day in January when we could all be together without having to rush between family and jobs. Even now that they're older, it is so much nicer to spend the day together that we choose and plan around. This year, we're doing it on New Year's Day. My son's girlfriend won't be back from Los Angeles until the 30th, and they have New Year's Eve plans, and they have to go back to Evansville on the 2nd, so we chose New Year's Day to be our Christmas. Personally, I can't think of a better way to spend the first day of the New Year than with my kids!

December 22, 200817 yr I feel for you having to work Christmas Day if it is your 4th year doing so. We are never closed Christmas Eve or the day after Christmas unless it is a weekend. As far as vacation time for holidays it is done by a lottery system. If you had the week or day before or after a holiday this year, you can't have it the same holiday next year.
December 22, 200817 yr Musketeer - I'm a nurse and as such I've had to work many holidays. However, most employers will try their best to stagger employees so that everyone has either Christmas eve or Christmas day off. This seems very inconsiderate that you must do both days. Without knowing your line of employment, that just seems harsh!!

Without knowing your line of employment, that just seems harsh!! I work for CSXT, the railroad. In the notice that they sent out, it stated that all Yardmasters (my job title) would work their regular assigned shifts. My shift is from 2p.m. until 11p.m. Sunday through Thursday. My company has never that I know of altered schedules for their employees.

My shift is from 2p.m. until 11p.m. Sunday through Thursday. My company has never that I know of altered schedules for their employees. I work for Norfolk Southern. My job title doesn't usually require working on Holidays so with the Chistmas Eve/Christmas and New Year's Eve/New Year's Holidays I was able to use the vacation time I had left to be off from Dec 18th through Jan 5th. I used to be a dispatcher though so I worked Christmas several times over the years.
December 22, 200817 yr Musk, I worked for the same company and we always stopped running trains on Christmas Eve. If you were in a hotel you got to come home in a taxi. The trains up north are parked so why are they working where you are at? I worked out of Louisville Osborn yard. The last 8 years no body worked on these days. Now I'm gone so maybe they are but guys I talk to say its so slooooow. Doesn't make sense and I feel for you, at least you won't be moving many cars.
