Working on Christmas

Featured Replies

I don't work Christmas day but I'll be volunteering at a church that day. I usually do it every Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I work Christmas Eve until 2, but that's it! Sorry you have to work. Merry Christmas anyways though!

Musk, I worked for the same company and we always stopped running trains on Christmas Eve. If you were in a hotel you got to come home in a taxi. The trains up north are parked so why are they working where you are at?

I worked out of Louisville Osborn yard. The last 8 years no body worked on these days. Now I'm gone so maybe they are but guys I talk to say its so slooooow. Doesn't make sense and I feel for you, at least you won't be moving many cars.

System-wise they are shutting down, but for some reason local magament has decided that we need to have people out here working "just in case". It personally makes no sense to me. I spent 8 years on the road as a conductor and engineer and was always off for Christmas. I guess this is one of the "perks" of my job now, lol.

Anyways, as I have said, I am happy to have my job. I know that there are alot of people who would love to trade places with me. It is just getting depressing that I will not be able to spend Christmas with some of my family again.

Thats sad, Like I said earlier at least you won't be doing a whole lot.

Good Luck.

I work for CSXT, the railroad. In the notice that they sent out, it stated that all Yardmasters (my job title) would work their regular assigned shifts. My shift is from 2p.m. until 11p.m. Sunday through Thursday. My company has never that I know of altered schedules for their employees.

My step-father, who also works for CSX, is a Conductor and he also has to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

January will make my step-dad 3 years with the company as a conductor but still has to work both days. Sucks.

^^^I just spoke with a conductor who was signing up for unemployment. Three years with the company. Progressive Rail in Raceland lays off half of their people. That sucks.

If my step-dad gets kicked in Hazard he can go back to Loyall and work so that's a good thing.

That stinks. When I was a dispatcher it was the same way. We used to forward all the phones to our an answering machine with our boss' phone number on it in case there was a crossing gate malfunction or something but then a VP called and didn't get to talk to someone and got upset so from then on someone had to be in the office even with no trains running. I swear I think they did that just so they could sit around with their families and act important by "checking in to make sure they don't need my help". I ended up taking an officer's job 3 years ago but I don't really have any direct subordinates so I don't have to make the call on whether people work on holidays or not. Anyway, sorry you have to work and hopefully you'll still get to spend some good time with your family.

Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for my job, but as I said this is the 4th Christmas in a row that I have worked. What makes it worse is that I have 4 vacation days left for this year but my boss said that since we are so short handed I can't take them. He followed this with an e-mail that said we had to work, but he would be on vacation, and have a merry Christmas. :fight:

We used to have a Company Commander when I was in the army that would do stuff like this. He would send word for us to not travel somewhere or do something when he was already there/doing something.

One time, he sent word to us that Italy was off limits due to "activity" and then we found out he was already down there with his girlfriend, which was why he could not tell us in person.

Just makes you disrespect them and always question their leadership.

You should always look out for those that are helping you look good at what you do.

I just saw the Holiday schedule for my work a few minutes ago. I have to work Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, again. :irked::madman: This will make the 4th Christmas that I have worked. And to make matters worse, since we are short handed, I may have to stay over for 16 hours because I won't have anyone to relieve me at the end of my shift.

Is anyone else going to be working over the Holidays, or will I be on BGP posting to myself, lol.

I feel for you alum97, I worked Christmas and most all holidays for years in former jobs in Security and Maintnance Control/dispatch jobs.

When all others have a company holiday off then there has to be Security there at all times, usually extra/o.t. personel.
