November 3, 200817 yr One name that I have not seen that could be a hot commodity in the college rank even though he did not get much of a chance in the pro's is Lane Kiffin...I know his name was rumored after he got fired from the Raiders to possibly be a candidate in Knoxville. Another name I would not be surprised to hear pop up is Tommy Bowden...just for name recognition only. Just got done talking someone close to UT, and they say talks with Kiffin have been ongoing for weeks. From what he has heard, that's the #1 target...
November 3, 200817 yr It seems that whether in college basketball or college football, a National Title gives you about a 10 year window. As time goes on and you don't win, those whispers will continue to get louder. No surprise that he is finished, as loaded as the SEC always is, would be interesting to see if the next coach can have an "Alabama" type effect on the program. Goodness knows, fans will be expecting that the first year, whether realistic or not.
November 3, 200817 yr This concerns me, I think that they might get someone who can coach and recruit, I was for keeping Fulmer, he is my kind of coach at UT. Who would have thought 5 years ago that Brooks would outlast Fulmer???????
November 3, 200817 yr Honestly I never like Fulmer for the way he stabbed Johnny Majors in the back, I think it is funny how UT kind of showed him the door.
November 3, 200817 yr I understand UT hasn't had the best year, but Fulmer has done a great job while at Tennessee.. 150-51 record, 8-7 bowl record, 2 SEC titles, Nation title, and he has finished ranked in the top 25 in 13 of his 17 years..

November 4, 200817 yr Just watched local sports on WPSD 6 out of Paducah and they had small clip from press conference and stated he is resigning as of the end of the season at university request. Also said he signed a new deal last summer and that UT has agreed to pay him 6 mil to walk away and finally the biggie for me. They announced that UT will honor Fulmer at the UK game and will call it Phil Fulmer Day.
November 4, 200817 yr I misunderstood my source. He was talking about Gruden... So was it Gruden or Kiffin in Knoxville? I'd be happy with either one. Cutcliffe and the old ball coach would have to take some getting used to.

November 4, 200817 yr I would love to see Boise State's coach perform in a BCS program. I have always wondered if he could pull off the same job that Urban Meyer did. Perused a few Vol boards and they were dismissing Peterson because he is Scientologist. Would not mix well with those in the Bible Belt.
November 4, 200817 yr I misunderstood my source. He was talking about Gruden... He was a GA at UT and his wife is from East Tennessee and a UT grad.
November 4, 200817 yr I had to sleep on this turn of events before I could even comment on it. Being a Vol fan for over 40 years as well as an alumni of the school, I was not happy with the way Coach Fulmer was treated. I will say that I'm not surprised, though. It appears that the President of the University, Mr. Peterson, had a lot to do with this chain of events. At this point it doesn't really matter, though. We are where we are at this point. I have not been happy with the way this season has gone so far. I have not seen a team play like this since the early days of Coach Majors in the late 70's. It will be interesting to see how the last 3 games play out. At any rate, I'll remain a Vol and hope that the AD, Mike Hamilton, can hit a home run like he did with Coach Pearl and the basketball team. These are just some random thoughts from a Vol Fan that is still trying to get his arms around this decision. Coach Fulmer, Thanks for the Memories and giving the best years of your life to our University!! Go VOLS!!!
November 4, 200817 yr My thinking is that if the Tennessee big boosters are willing to pony up $6 million to pay Coach Fulmer's buy out of his contract, they have their sights set on a big time coach to replace him. This has been in the works for a while, so I would guess they already have their man. Jon Gruden certainly fits that profile. His wife is a former Tennessee cheerleader who might be interested in going back to East Tennessee to raise their three boys.
