Best Officials in your region/area?

Featured Replies

9th region - Joe Scully and the Hall of Famer, Tim O'Hara

I agree with Tim O'Hara, he's a class act. Scully is a JV official, not even in the top 40 in the 9th Region, so I wouldn't consider him as one of the best.

Tim Ohara and Jon Campbell in the 9th. Pouncy is a rising star as well.

Campbell is no longer working high school games. He has moved on to concentrate on his college career. Good lucki Jon!

Scully is a JV official, not even in the top 40 YET in the 9th Region, so I wouldn't consider him as one of the best.
Thats fine if thats your opinion. The whole ranking system is a joke though and I would just add one word into your sentence.
TubbyCAT Good assesment of some of the top officials in the region.

I have watched alot of the top games in the area over the past few years and it looks like these guys get most of those games.

Some of the BEST PAST officials that have come through the 10th/11th would have to be Rick Chasteen, John Chamberlain, and Joe Thompson. These guys officiated every game for the kids no matter who was coaching or what type of game..:thumb:

You knew when Chasteen and Chamberlain did your games, you were gonna get a fair deal. I have to add the Clary brothers (Keith and Kevin) to this list also.

Why exactly is the ranking system a joke?

As far as the ninth goes, Campbell and O'Hara were the class of the region in terms of officiating, and Campbell has moved on to college.

Personally I'm not a big fan of Pouncy as one of the best, but there are worse.

Do we have any in the 16th Region???? Ha ha just kidding. I think Bobby Hall is an outstanding official.

Why exactly is the ranking system a joke?

To think that the coaches see enough of all the 100+ officials in the 9th region to accurately be able to identify the best 40, in order, is ridiculous.
Chappie is EXCELLENT! (nickname or no nickname :D)

I agree Chappie is pretty good, but he may be losing a step or 2 these days. Campbell is not officiating 9th this year from what I hear, but is very good, and as for Pouncy, I've seen him excellent in some "big" games, but seems somewhat "lethargic" in the not so big games/schools. What separates O'hara from Pouncy is O'hara gives the same effort no matter the size of the school or the "importance" of the game, and I don't always see that from Pouncy. IMO

:jump:In the 10th/11th or Bluegrass Basketball Association as they like to be refered to, There are several guys that are year in and year out at the top.

John Chamberlain, Although he is not calling again this year because of health reasons I have been told, Is the one that all the coaches want on their games. He gives it his all night in and night out no matter if he is in Lexington or if he is at Augusta.

The guys that have risen to the top the last couple of years and have worked alot of the big games all over the regions both in the 10th/11th and the regional tournament would be Bart Lenox, Cary Lyle, Don Werner, Bo Queen, J.T. Taylor ,Clayton Brooks and Kirk Hudson. These guys seem to be there at the end every year. I have heard that this may be Bart's last year as he may move on to strictly College...Good Luck Bart. You have done well..

Others you would include in the up and comers class are Royce Blevins, Eric Thornsberry, Terry Smith, and a few others I have seen work but just have not been able to get names for them..

Also some very good officials but seems to work alot of the girls games would be Jack Whittamore, Sherrianne Shuey, Kevin Smith, just to name a few..

I think the BBA by far is one of the strongest associations in the state of Ky. They have the strongest play night in and night out and overall work really hard for the kids.. There are several good officials in the other regions but from top to bottom the BBA is the best..;)

Terry Coldiron and Sean Knolman are great officials, add in Mark Howell from the 8th as well...Mark referee's without emotion...calm and consisent...

I'll take Cornbread in the 8th...:lol: Sarcasm in case you can't tell but for real, Coldiron always did a great job. I enjoyed playing when he was officiating. Anyone know offhand how many times he's worked the sweet 16?

In the 9th, Pouncy and Kenny Ball.

With the tip of the basketball season nearing I thought it would be a great discussion on who some of the better officials in the state and each region are. These guys do a thankless job and NEVER get the respect they deserve, especially the really talented officials.

In the 10th region you have to go with: John "J.T." Taylor, Clayton Brooks, Cary Lyle, Bo Queen, Eric Thornsbury, and Gary Wilson @ the top of the list!

I would remove Bo Queen from this list and add the much improved Bart Lennox. Jerry Thornsbury has also been a class act through the years but I don't think son Erik is there yet. I believe Bart Lennox has collegiate aspirations so he may not be around much longer.

I agree that Bart should be on the list, and yes that he is looking into the college ranks.

I like Howell, too.
