This is not intended to be an anti Bush thread, but with the lowest approval rating in American history or at least one of the lowest, Where do you stand on Bush? I know BGP nation has many republicans, I am just curious on your thoughts.

Somehow I'm doubting that.

Here's my take:

Bush has made some critical mistakes that I believe, as of now, puts him in the "bad president" category. History will decide that. But, what a lot of people overlook is the fact that Bush was dealt a pretty raw hand when it comes to his presidency. 9/11, dot com bubble popping, Katrina, and now a crashing economy are things he had little to no control over.

I believe Bush's low rating is due to the fact that liberals hate him because he has defended this country from terrorism. They just plain hate the power of the US miliitary, its political dominance and its economic strength. The liberals all hate the US for being the only Superpower. Conseratives rate him low for his some of his stances on such items as illegal aliens and not vetoing some spending bills. He has made both sides mad, but for different reasons.

While this may be true, how he handled them will put the stamp on his presdency.

The president's hands are kind of strapped with matters of the economy. He handled 9/11 admirably. Katrina could be seen as a blunder, but you can't pin that all on him.

Bush, and his predecessors Clinton and GWH Bush have been average presidents. Bush has been saddled with a horrible Congress but he has done a poor job holding Congress members of both parties accountable and his communication skills are extremely lacking. I give Bush high marks for the war on terrorism, tax policy, and Supreme Court appointments.

Very good points.

I don't think his administration or the current congressional & senate leaders recognized what was coming. Yes there was proposed legislation, but it was not passed, and as a whole, they have to be held accountable. However, in the press and this campaign, Bush is taking all the heat. While he deserves much of it, our legislators, while suffering from a very low approval rating (9% at last tally), do seem to be getting a free ride on this one. Bush is blamed for the war in Iraq, yet he had the same information on WMDs that congress had and they voted for the action as well. The real issue there was that Sadam had plenty of time (thanks to the UN) to move any WMDs into other places (Syria seems the most likely place).

The one thing I will say that Bush has done well is keep the country safer. Even though we were promised further attacks from Bin Laden of an even larger scale, they have not materialized. I guess being on the run makes it hard to plan largescale terrorist activity. Our attitude changed after 9/11 and we all became a little more afraid of those who would do us harm.

To run as a fiscally conservative candidate, he has done completely opposite of that, which is a big strike in my book.

For these same reasons, I think he has been a good President. No President since FDR has dealt with so many issues on so many fronts.
