October 28, 200817 yr Dang I don't even get 7 paid sick days a year. Nor do I feel I need them either. If someone is too sick to work more than a few days then they should attempt to make up those hours. Or head to the doctors office because they clearly have some serious health issues. Understand that sick days are NOT just about the person being sick. Kids are sick and you have to stay home with them as they cannot go to daycare or school. And any more what about when your elderly parents are sick and they have to be taken to the doctor. I could live with a mandated 5 sick days per year for each job.
October 28, 200817 yr I don't think he cares about economics. Either that, or he doesn't care about the poor of this country. This will result in so much unemployment. Essentialy it would be eliminating the lower middle class. They would likely feel it the most. As for those getting the raises due to the minimum wage increases, they would be able to enjoy it for a very short time because other more qualified people that lost their jobs because of minimum wage increases would then be competing for those same minimum wage jobs.

Please explain the bold. Are you saying they would be bumped up to the next class or bumped down?

Yea I know what you're saying, but FMLA helps out with this alot. There would be far too many people that would abuse this IMO. I agree with the 5 days being sufficient, perhaps you could earn more for every four or five years in which you're with that same company.

Think about it if you have just 2 kids and they are sick 3 times a year, you have used your allotment of days and plus one.
October 28, 200817 yr This is comical if true. I can tell you this...some of my small business' laid employees off when the min wage was raised in KY. These business' have very small margins and 20% over a couple of years added to the bottom line was brutal. I can guarantee this...if this passes...I will be forced to shut down 3 business' which employ about 35 people. Granted most of them are part-time or second job workers, but the business' wouldnt be able to survive.

October 28, 200817 yr Please explain the bold. Are you saying they would be bumped up to the next class or bumped down? They would suffer most, because there's no way companies could afford to give them an equal raise. So when the prices begin to raise due to higher costs, they will be left with the same wages. Sure they may still be somewhat higher than minimum wage, but it will certainly be hardest on them I would think. It would be like getting a pay cut, but for a very large number of people. You disagree?

October 28, 200817 yr Here is the danger in jacking this up so much so fast. For every fulltime worker in the USA, it will cost the employer $6,000 + additional. The price of fast food, groceries, gas, etc. will all be impacted by this. A 46% hike in minimum wage will hurt summer workers as well as companies who use them will be forced to get by with fewer. Let's say a mom and pop grocery store has 5 employees. That is $30,000+ per year. How many more people will they be able to hire? Will they have to lay someone off? This will really bring out even more young voters for Obama as they don't have a clue as to the negative impact of this potential hike. Not only will it increase entry level employees, but others will have raise their wages as well to keep good employees. This will NOT create new jobs, it will slow down economic growth and eliminate jobs. However, politically, this is a very smart move on Obama's part. He is 'shoring up' the young voters with this proposal. And with Reid and Pelosi in charge on the hill, .... it will probably pass. You basically have it covered. Artificially increasing the wage base by such a large % relative to the current rate will have devastating effects in terms of inflation and unemployment. I have a feeling Obama actually knows this (surprisingly enough), but is using this pledge (like all his pledges before) as just another attempt of securing his voting base. This plan is basically the same income redistribution plan as his so-called tax plan in its design based on what I've read thus far. Obama must be stopped. I know a lot of you guys don't want to hear this, but this guy is absolute poison. He is promising things that sound wonderful on the surface but upon further inspection turn out to be putrid beneath the surface. Turn away from this well-spoken deceiver now before it is too late.

One of my larger restaurant clients is currently struggling since the latest minimum wage increase primarily because in this economic environment they can't just pass the cost on to the consumer because the consumer will just stop dining out since discretionary expenditures are the first to dwindle in a poor economy anyway. And for the record, this minimum wage increase has led to fewer hours being offered to employees as a result in order to combat the cost increases. Funny how the market knows whats best after all.
October 28, 200817 yr And people think Obama is "best for America" right now. Wow. Why does Obama not understand that the majority of people making minimum wage are those that are young working a job for the first time? What's wrong with working hard and working your way up the ladder? This country is turning into a giant daycare and they want daddy Obama to wipe their noses and rear ends for them and this is just what people like Obama want so they can be relevant. All people seem to care about is themselves, they've never known a world that put others before themselves, and believe that the needs of the individual should come first. I'm disgusted by the entitlement mentality of so many in this country and Obama seems to be exactly what they've been waiting for. What in the world ever happened to "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country"?
October 28, 200817 yr Another tidbit along the same line: Obama and Biden support guaranteeing workers seven paid sick days per year. They will destroy small business
October 28, 200817 yr What in the world ever happened to "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country"? It has morphed somewhat. It is now "Ask not what you can do for your county - ask what you can extort from others who are working hard for your country."
