Mason County 20 Russell 7

Featured Replies

Mason County played well and deserves to be commended. They are the better team. I really hope they do well in the playoffs. They seem to carry themselves very well and play with a lot of pride and spirit.

Russell is as down this year as they have been this decade. This isn't a state championship caliber Russell team. That being said, though, they are not a terribly bad team either. Mason County deserves all the credit here and I think they have a good shot to make some noise in the playoffs this year.

 Bolded part.

It doesn't take long to forget a state title and runner-up spot I guess. Oh, well, you've given us a good definition for hyperbole in the heat of the moment. :thumb:

I will eat crow in this one, I thought Russell would win. I respect Coach Mclone and what he does with his program, but obviously Coach Buchanon is doing a great job as well.

Thanks for finally noticing that!!;) Nothing against Coach McGlone, he is a great coach, but some have way underestimated Coach Buchanan. The win at Russell is a HUGE step for the program and Coach B has finally gotten that 'monkey off his back'.

Keep it up Royals!!:fight:

No doubt that Mason County has been good, is good this year, and will continue to be good!

We Russell fans are just disappointed that this year's Russell team hasn't lived up to the expectations set from the last few years. When you go to the state title game two years in a row, it tends to produce unrealistic expectations and somewhat of an arrogance that makes our first reaction be "what in the world is wrong with Russell?" when we lose rather than considering the possibility that there are other good programs, too, like Mason County who definitely deserved to win this game tonight. They are clearly the better team this year. Heck, even when Russell had some of their best teams they have ever had this decade, the games with Mason County were always close!

As long as the Royals keep their coach, I would imagine they are going to be a force to be reckoned with year in and year out. I just really hope Mason County manages to get it done in the playoffs this year!

Excellent post! :thumb:

I don't know. That's likely the last they will see of teams in their district this year. Their playoff road will likely consist of Magoffin, Sheldon Clark, Belfry, and Breathitt.

1st 2 at home should be wins for the Royals. After that- gets a little tougher.

You are correct in identifying my hyperbole in the heat of the moment. Nonetheless, it is still true.

Sheldon Clark will provide some good competition for round 2. I think Mason can pull that one out, though. I am pretty sure that if mason can pull off the upset at Belfry, then the semi-final game against Breathitt would be at Mason, though.

 So:confused:

So Russell has 2 state titles in their history and one of those (along with their only other state final appearance) is in this decade but they've been "down" this decade?

I'm pretty sure he meant this team is down COMPARED to this decade, not the entire decade is down.

I never did not notice that;) Coach McGlone has the field named after him for a reason.

Yes. I just meant that this is their worst team in a decade. That being said, this has undoubtedly been their best decade ever as a program.

I'm pretty sure he meant this team is down COMPARED to this decade, not the entire decade is down.

I figured that surely had to be it but if you read the sentence that's not what comes out at all.

I'm glad it's corrected my misinterpretation.

Have you read my posts? I never once indicated Coach McGlone wasn't a great coach and it is wonderful the field is named after him. My argument hasn't been that McGlone isn't a great coach, but that Buchanan has been underestimated by some.

To the Mason folks... how about we get the Royals field named after Buchanan?! He is definitely the one who has built the program which has gained the respect of many across the state. He has brought excitement and instilled pride for the school and county of which hadn't been there for the football program until he got here. :thumb:

How 'bout it Royals fans?!
