Raceland has had a couple of good teams the last couple of years. I don't think this suddenly turns into a great program over the course of a great group of kids coming through' date=' does raceland even have a district Championship? Hopefully Raceland will become a better overall program after this season, but from the looks of things it will go back to the old Raceland who will get manhandled by most schools in the area year in and year out. So while most people feel Raceland should win this game and have a good post season, I'd say over the next 10 years they will be lucky to keep within 150 total points with either Ashland or Russell.[/quote']

No, Raceland does not have any State Titles, the Rams playoff record is not a good one but here are some facts for you about Raceland's "only a couple" of good years.........

I don't have the history/numbers as far as how many winning seasons vs. losing sesons at Raceland right now but I would be willing to bet that there are far more winning seasons than losing seasons here.

 

I realize that you are an Ashland fan, I believe that Raceland fans have treated Ashland with nothing but respect on many threads/post on BGP and I know that I personally will continue to do that. I don't expect everyone to respect or even like Raceland. I would like to see some acknowledge what they have accomplished and it is far more than "a couple" of good seasons. Most all Ashland fans have given Raceland credit as well. Should you not want to that is fine. Good luck to your Tomcats.

I look forward to the game tonight. The weather forecast is good. It really should be a GREAT atmosphere. I hope it somehow turns out to be a close game. Being a Russell fan, I haven't gotten to see a close game this year. They've blown out 6 inferior opponents and been beaten pretty convincingly by 3 superior opponents.

 

Regardless of what you Raceland fans or TheBurnOut says, I still believe Raceland is the prohibitive favorite in this one. You speak the truth when you say that Russell is a good team. The only problem is that Raceland just might be a GREAT team this year!

 

Since TheBurnOut isn't going to cite any on-the-field facts that leads him to believe tonight is going to be a big Russell win...could he at least give us some indication of his past prognosticating abilities? Perhaps he has been known to spot monumental upsets with regularity? Did he pick Villanova over Georgetown, Douglas over Tyson, the Giants over the Patriots, etc.? Let us know, BurnOut. We're just looking for something to believe in here. :-)

Ryan, it is going to be a good game. I, personally, don't see a favorite in this game, I see two very good teams that are going to but heads and have to fight for a win. I don't think we can realistically say this team is the clear favorite, or that team is going to lose. I think to do that, we are just expressing wishful thinking. Sure, we want our team to win, but the simple fact is, Russell or Raceland will have to go out take this game from the other. Raceland is not going to just win this game, and Russell is not just going to upset Raceland, who ever wins this game is truly going to have to beat the other team.

 

Raceland has won a couple of close games that they had to take from the other team, Ashland was a tough game and always is, the LCA game was a fight to the end and normally is. The rest of Raceland's games were not as close.

 

Russell has been in some tough games, and just came up short. I know the score may not always indicate that, but I think the Ashland game was closer then the score, and the Simon Kenton game was a tough game and prepared Russell for tough competition. Mason County was tough, but their defense was just that good apparently.

 

Speculation is good, but I think this game has intangible variances, such as: two schools in close proximity, players that know each other, fans that know each other, parents and fans for one of the schools that attended the other school, frequent conversations with the fans from the other school, and playoff atmosphere. These things make for games that have a lot of emotions. And, games with a lot of emotions have swings in momentum and sometimes unexpected conclusions.

 

This will be a fight for a win for either team, and the momentum will likely swing several times before the game is over. No favorite in my book.

I still say Raceland is heavily favored in this game. Russell's best playmaker is out for the game. For a team with little depth, that is really going to hurt their offensive production. I was checking their site, and Bailey averages nearly 40yds per kickoff return. Thats gonna be a huge difference is starting field position. Also around 45yds per punt, with a long of 69. Thats a big difference in starting field position for Raceland. It would essentially be like Raceland coming in without Carver or Denton, but they also have ST responsibilities.

Well hopefully this year Raceland can win their first Regional title. I know you have pride in your school and that is great, but didn't the last team to go undefeated for Raceland lose in the first round of the playoffs? Like I said Raceland has had some really good teams, but they have also had some really really bad ones, Russell and Ashland have had bad years, but 1 about every 20 is about the average for them. Even in down years sometimes Russell or Ashland still make it to a Regional championship game. I think you all will make it to Louisville this year, I hope so anyways. When I see people bragging about tradition, they should do it on a week when they are not going up against Russell. win or lose tonight, it means nothing if Russell wins the next 25 meetings between the teams. Russell has some very very talented players coming up, as does Ashland, I believe area football is going back to where it was 4-10 years ago as far as talent level.

Excellent post. As I said, I do still think that Russell is a GOOD team, just not GREAT this year. I see your point. Theoretically, they are capable of putting it all together tonight and beating Raceland. This will be Raceland's toughest test since LCA and until LCA again. I only base my prediction on the fact that Russell hasn't put it all together yet this year. Maybe they do tonight. I hope for a close game. It should be fun.

Do you know this to be fact? He tried to play a little last week and apparently decided he couldn't go. If Bailey can't play, then this does remove a big play threat on offense. As you indicated, though, the biggest problem without him appears to be punting. From what we saw last week, Russell might as well go for it on every 4th down rather than punt the ball 10 yards.

When you face NKY teams every year in the 1st round of the playoffs, which more often than not has the state champs in their district, your playoff win record is not going to be very good.
