Was it truly their 2nd and 3rd teams, I distinctly remember a few years ago, when Bellevue was at Beechwood and the "2nd and 3rd" teams were in. Bellevue's young guys had gotten Beechwood to 3rd and 8 or 9. Instead leaving the "2nd or 3rd" line in, the first team came in against Bellevue's freshman and got the first down......:madman:

I remember the game that you speak of, yes we put a running back and 2 lineman in, this was done because Bellevue had put there first team back in for three series prior to Beechwood responding. Next time you want to tell a story, tell the whole thing,not just the part that makes you right!

Wow! I am really surprised by how lopsided the polling is considering Bellevue has possibly the best RB in NKY in the Buckler kid according to some posters. If he is as good as most have billed him out to be in other threads I would like to think Bellevue has a shot at this one.

BW year in and year out is that good. I have a great deal of respect for the program they have built. For you to say some of the other small schools don't put in the hard work is unacceptable. I can only speak for Bellevue and Dayton but those kids work as hard as any. You need to keep in mind Bellevue and Dayton each draw their kids from approximately one square mile. There are only so many athletes in one square mile. I would venture to say BW demographics is quite a bit larger and may even stretch outside the school district. They get the better athletes. I'm not trying to start the old recruiting issue. I believe parents that can improve their child's chances of getting into college by sending them to a school where they will get more exposure and play better competition should do just that. Also keep in mind BW is also high on the academic list. Hats off to BW but don't say the other kids don't work hard. They do. To go out against the likes of BW and believe you can win says a lot about the hearts of the kids from the other small schools. Bellevue kids believe they can win.

 

Beechwood started building their program a little over 30 years ago. At the time, we had no tuition students and we also drew (and draw) from a demographic of about a mile radius. Back then, most families were middle class families who were very involved and supportive. The tuition kids started coming AFTER we had a great program built.

 

I have no doubt that kids at Bellevue and Ludlow work very hard. I think the difference for us has been in coaching. Players cant make it alone. They need very dedicated, talented coaches who are willing to STAY with the program for years. We have been very lucky that way.

 

Back in the 70's Beechwood had great talent. Fred Mariani, only there a year started things off. Bernie Barre stayed 15 years building the program, Mike Yeagle needs no explanation, and now Noel Rash continues with the great program built up for him.

 

I don't like it when other small schools find excuses for why Beechwood is good and they cannot be. Any sports program can excell with the right combination of talent and coaching.

Beechwood fan I understand what you are saying. However the coaching thing IMO is not right anymore. The coaches at Ludlow, Bellevue, and Dayton. Especially during the last 6 years, have been VERY GOOD. That is great to hear how you all built the program up in the 1970's. However to say that these schools can do it now, is not that true IMO. The times now are a lot different. Talented Kids who would grow up in these systems at Ludlow, Bellevue, etc. usually don't end up going to the schools when they get in high school. Parents these days all think that their kids are going to go on to be great college athletes, and so they send them to Beechwood, CovCath, etc. So its basically impossible to really build a program and then stay on top now for these three little schools. Every now and then we see a group of talented kids stick together and stay at these schools, and that is when you see the success and are playing with you all. However it just can not be sustained. With how things are today, it just won't happen, until parents change.

 

No disrespect to Beechwood, CovCath, etc. However parents needs to realize that just going to these schools, dont mean your kid is good enough to play Division 1 football. I mean those are great teams but usually these kids still just go to the Georgetown, Union, Thomas More colleges etc. So if a kid good enough they still will be able to get to these colleges while playing at the other smaller schools, as long as they have coaches that help. Becuase they will still get noticed. Parents just don't realize this, and that is why it is not like in the 70's. When you all started to build your program in the right direction. Because in today's age it is impossible to now.

Future Coach, I have always respected your posts but I feel you are being misleading here. I cant speak for Cov Cath and there numbers, and as I see it, thats a Catholic school, and I dont believe anyone sends there kids there for athletics alone, education, tradition, and it just being a catholic school has alot more to do with it. But as far as Beechwood goes, you make it sound as if all the athletes come from out of district areas. Yes there are a couple and only a couple of kids that the parents have chosen Beechwood over schools in there area, not for athletics but for academics and yes, If I didnt live in the area I would try to find the means to send my kids there as well. I dont believe any of the parents with the exception of a handfull believe thier kids can play at the Div1 level and those that do are probably right! And they all live right here in Fort Mitchell.

Buckler has played well against those that dont. When he comes up against any formidable team his true colors show, I am more impressed with his running mate #33. Buckler doent evan start on many teams in NKY. Tedfromvillahills dont be surprised, causes wrinkles!

He puts up numbers but because he plays in a Bellevue system that he fits well in and their schedule allows for him to look better than he really is. To give a better perspective for you, at Highlands he would probably be the 4th or 5th string Rb behind Conner, Head, Finnell, and Crawford.

And everybody downs them and says there over rated just because of the small school and the small size. Ricky is a really good running back with a HUGE heart and would start at other big schools and nobody has faith in him.

Eta just have to ask. Is this thing with Buckler personal with you? Every time you mention him it seems to be negative. Give him some credit. Put him behind Highlands line and see how many yards he gets. Try posting the players you think are good instead of knocking the ones you don't.

I read your previous post, and though I respect your thoughts, I cannot help but disagree with you in some points. Yes, probably it is harder now than it was 30 years ago. However, you can never convince me that talent, heart, hard work and coaching cannot equal a great team, and possibly a future dynasty ANYWHERE. It can happen. Yes, socioeconomic factors are a part of it (I dispute genes, work ethic and opportunities), but overcoming those factors are what champions are made of.

 

 

How many Beechwood kids go on to Division I??.......very very few. Maybe one kid a year goes on to SUCCESSFULLY play more than a year at a college level.

 

If you go to Beechwood with the hopes of a college scholarship and beyond, you have gone for the wrong reasons. Beechwood boys play football for the opportunity of being a part of something great in the most exciting times of their young lives. If a scholarship follows, that is the icing on the cake.

 

To say that other small schools simply cannot compete is insulting to the kids, coaches and parents who are a part of any small school.
