September 19, 200818 yr If the rich people are upset that they don't pay enough taxes and their taxes should be raised, can't they just pay more taxes and refuse deductions and refunds? I wonder if any of the Hollyweird folk or even Biden or Obama pay EXTRA taxes PRESENTLY? Or do they pay JUST what the government says they should pay. I have posted the same thing in this thread and in another...These people make comments about our taxes needing to be raised and then they take deductions. They can also CHOOSE to pay a higher rate...just like everyone else can.
September 19, 200818 yr It's also good economics. Actually, it is the opposite. It is bad economics. If I have millions of dollars and the government takes 1/2 of it, that is a lot of money I cannot invest in the economy. Fewer job creations, less innovations encouraged, etc. It will kill small business owners. I would rather have a higher tax on good and services. I think even Steve Forbes' 'flat tax' is a much better idea. Also, what kills me is the direct quote from Obama and Biden that his tax plan would reduce the taxes of 95% of the people. That is impossible since between 30-40% of American don't pay any taxes at all and some even get an earned income tax credit (refund) which is for more than they even paid into the system. This is quite simply a living subsidy. Redistribution of wealth is not the answer. If everybody makes the same no matter what, then there exists no incentive for doing anymore than just enough not to get fired. That is not a democratic society and is socialism plain and simple. September 19, 200818 yr It's also good economics. You probably support Universal health care too don't you...:irked:
September 19, 200818 yr Let me keep a dollar and I will invest it in a business. Let the government take that dollar, and they will waste it. Guaranteed. Indeed, or give it to the guy down the road that quit his job so they could qualify for welfare and food stamps...:madman:
September 19, 200818 yr Apparently Biden doesn't believe it's patriotic to give to charities since he has given less than $400 per year to charities in the last ten years but he and his wife have made between $210,000 and $320,000 in those ten years. I'm sure he tithes.....
September 19, 200818 yr Wade said in a statement to NRO. “Like most regular churchgoers, they contribute to their church, and they also contribute to their favorite causes with their time as well as their checkbooks, whether it’s [Jill] Biden’s volunteer work with military families or the Biden breast-health initiative, or the way in which the family pitched in driving supplies to the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, or the ways Sen. Biden has supported charities that help women, police, and veterans.” I guess then my time helping out my neighbors cutting down trees, fixing downspouts, nailing on shingles, and in general helping out those that can't help themselves because of wind damage, I can claim as a tax deduction in his new tax plan? Ha lol I saw this only after my post about him tithing,.. that's hilarious.
September 22, 200818 yr Again, I ask where do you draw the line? What do you want their marginal or effective tax rates to be? 50%? 60? 70? Can one of the liberals on this message board please give me an answer to this? I'm still waiting.
September 22, 200818 yr Can one of the liberals on this message board please give me an answer to this? I'm still waiting. It if you have read the entire thread, it is not all about taxes, but about creating a fairer (more fair??) system - so that people can participate in the American Dream. I don't know what the marginal tax should be, but our system is inherently unfair. It is amazing to me that conservatives don't believe in the survival of the species - except when it comes to social darwinism then they are all on board.

I recently read a book that had an interesting section devoted to the history of Social Darwinism.

It is amazing to me that conservatives don't believe in the survival of the species - except when it comes to social darwinism then they are all on board. Like I said in my first post- many conservatives, including myself, believe that the way to eliminate the most poverty is through less government, which will cause more economic growth. If our system is unfair, we believe it is because we have too many taxes. The way to fairness- i.e., allowing as many people as possible the best opportunity to better their life- is through less taxes and more economic growth.

When 5% of the citizens pay 60% of the tax something is definitely unfair.
September 22, 200818 yr Can one of the liberals on this message board please give me an answer to this? I'm still waiting. Let me respond (as an accused liberal) with some questions/comments: First, if the top earners in this country are the ones who create jobs, why do jobs keep leaving this country? Second, if a higher tax will cause the top earners undue hardship, to the point they can no longer create jobs, they will sell their company, and do so for a profit more often than not. Am I to believe the top earners in this country really give a hoot about the people who work in their companies? I don't. I've yet to see a big-business owner consider anything but the best interests of the stockholders and themselves when making this sort of decision. Small business is another matter and I know lots of well-meaning and employee-focused small business owners. Thirdly, why is it that the top earners are always the first to cry foul when an increase in minimum wage is proposed, and in the same sentence decry the amount of money poured into the entitlement programs each year? Just some things that strike me as needing to be answered before I let myself pity the top earners.

I don't know what the marginal tax should be, but our system is inherently unfair. Do you mind expounding on how a revised tax system will allow more participation in the American dream? Not challenging you, but am curious as to what your angle might be. Also, by "inherently unfair", do you mean unfair to the lower income classes, higher income classes, or both?

Also, by "inherently unfair", do you mean unfair to the lower income classes, higher income classes, or both? IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT TAXES!! The pure capitalist system is not guided by morals and is more machiavellian than anything. Society has to provide and moral compass to the invisible hand and currently we are not. Any system that creates such a large gap between the rich and poor is blatantly unfair.

Didn't say it was just about taxes. Just asking you a question based on your previous post. But let's move on. What specific Machiavellian characteristics do you feel exist in a pure capitalist system?
