January 27, 200917 yr Word is next year in order to play in the NKMSBL, a school must field a boys 6th - 8th grade team and a girls 6th - 8th grade team. Maybe that will force Highlands hand???? This may be what is needed to finally get the teams started. Though not a must to be a NKMSBL member, it would make scheduling much tougher. For the first time in the 3 years I have been around the HMS Middle School program, I heard last week that the Middle School administration is in favor of starting the program. Some of the reasons given for not having the program in the past (gym time, lack of interest, finances, etc...) have been worked through. Apparently the Middle School program is under the direction of the High School Athletic Dept and the addition of the teams will have to be blessed by the HS Athletic Dept. I have seen first hand the effect of not having a 6th grade team on the program, especially when some 6th grade players are rostered to the 7th grade team. An inflated roster of 15 or 16 players makes it tough on the coach to juggle playing time. Seventh graders are cut in favor of 6th graders then needed the following year as 8th graders to fill out the roster. Some 6th graders are cut trying out for the 7th grade team, get discouraged and do not return to tryout as 7th graders. Three balanced teams of 12 players in the 6th-7th-8th grade would be easier to manage. When the HS seasons are over we can hope that Willie and Jamie can get together with the Athletic Dept, the MS administration and MS parents and finally make it happen.

May be doing some make-ups this weekend? Cancelled and the Birds have a game with Sharp in Falmouth on Thursday that probably will get snowed out. Any teams wanna play some pickup games? :banana:

This is great news:banana: You are correct, I know of 2 or 3 current 8th graders that didnt make the 7th grade team as 6th graders and decided to stop trying out. They are very athletic kids who could definitely help the team in some respects.

It is being discussed as a change to the Bylaws, which would make it a requirement to be a part of the team.

I understand that if they change the rules or by-laws that all schools would have to have 6th grade teams to be in the NKMSBL. I was referring to the necessity of HMS or any other school for that matter needing to be a member of NKMSBL. HMS could be an independent and schedule any team that is willing to play. Again, this would create more work and is NOT the desired option. NKMSBL members are discussing a by-law change because of one school. Every other 6th grade team has a bye when HMS comes up on their schedule. I'm sure it's frustrating for the other schools when the 6th graders do not get to play that game.

The change has been predicated not just on members not having 6th grade teams, but corresponding girls teams as well. This is not a Highlands rule, in fact it was tabled because of other schools.

It makes no difference if the NKMSBL changes the by-laws or not as to whether HMS has a 6th grade team. Stinkyboy seems to have the inside scoop on this and IMO there will be 6th grade teams at HMS next year unless someone above the middle school administration puts the squeeze on it. Now they just need to find another coach.

Last year we had 2 games get cancelled because of the weather and we only made up 1. I would hope that if a time can't be decided on before the regular season ends and a game could have a bearing on the seedings for the tourney, it would get played somehow.
