First 2 games should be battles, but Mason's 8th handled Fleming very easily last time. Any thoughts or predictions? Mason County 6th wins easily, Fleming 7th wins big, Mason 8th wins big.
January 14, 200917 yr Wouldn't it be nice if they were tripleheaders? LOL Sorry, I don't mean to rub salt. Should be 2 wins for the 8th Birds. I watched 8th grade Woodland struggle for 3 quarters against CC 8th grade Gold last night - Shocking!!!:eek: Birds beat an undermanned Newport squad tonight 47 to 37. Starters played about a quarter and half. Newport only dressed 7 kids. The Guilkey kid is very fast and had a nice night for the Wildcats. Collinsworth led the Birds nailing a couple 3's. Everybody got a lot of minutes tonight. In the 7th grade game it was ugly. I think the final was Highlands 62 to Newport's 20. Tripleheaders would bring a nice gate and bigger crowds.

The only game that was close was 6th grade. 7th grade might have scored 10 points and 8th grade barely scored 20. 7th grade lost by 30+ and 8th grade lost by 20. It will be a quick out in the league tournament if these boys don't decide to play.

Swanson got into early foul trouble, so the offense was a little out of sync. Huesman hit a couple 3's early in the second half as the Jags pulled away in a hurry. Coach Franzen must have chewed on them a bit in the locker room. Sampson, Pouncy, Brad Franzen, all of them had solid second halves.

January 14, 200917 yr SVM beat Holmes by 21 in the CC pre-season tourney and by 6 at Holmes earlier in the year. I believe Holmes won vs. Twenhoefel but it was early in the year.... Has SV played Holmes yet? Also, has Twenhofel played the Bulldogs?
January 15, 200917 yr Highlands 8th beat Woodland tonight at the Bird's nest 43-34. Woodland was 7-1 in the conference coming in. Birds jumped out to a 16-3 lead after 1st qtr on a very tough man-man press and hot shooting by Luke Turner and Donovan McCoy who each had 6pts. Woodland went on a 6-0 run to start the 2nd qtr and the halftime score was 21-13. The Birds never trailed in this one and nailed 7 of 9 FT's in the 4th qtr to keep the lead. Woodland's Chris Englemon is a very good player. Seemed like everytime he touched the ball he scored. Long and athletic he has a soft touch around the basket. He finished with 13pts for the Wildcats. Donovan McCoy had 14 to lead the Birds. Birds had their best qtr of the year in the 1st and took care of business in the 4th.

January 15, 200917 yr Good win! When does Highlands play Beechwood? I think next week. I hear Beechwood has a very good team with a few of the Flash AAU players. Should be a dandy. The Birds are playing much more inspired basketball these days.

I think they need to get a committment from someone in the school system, paraprofessional who will formulate a group of kids and take them to the AAU circuit. Even if you enter a league and go 2-8 atleast you are facing some good competition. If you took the Newport 8th grade school team and played them in the SOAS league I think they would win a few games and certainly compete and not get totally blown out. I thought they hustled and played pretty decent defense the other night against Highlands. Guilkey and Baldwin seemed to be their primary offense though. Sometimes you have to take your lumps and play better competition before you can see positive results. I know a few years ago I remember seeing a group of Newport boys playing out there (McDaniel,Tucker,etc) I think for the Magic. They seemed to do pretty good and now those kids are that much better for it.
January 15, 200917 yr Do any of the boys play AAU??? If they don't this could be alot of the problem.. I know Killercats has shown significant interest in getting involved in AAU but as a whole they need to get a group of them playing so they can learn to play together.
