Now, with that said, I don't think it is a good idea for 8th graders to play on a high school team. I concede that there are some 8th graders that may be able to, but I don't think 8th graders should play up just so a school can have enough players for a freshman team. Just my opinion.

I know a lot of parents that want little Johnny to play on the freshman team until he gets hurt by a 16 year old man child sophmore or seldom used junior and then they want to cry "How could YOU let this happen to my child?" Keep the 8th graders in MS ball until they are ready. Many will not be ready as freshmen, but they will have no choice then. Play or don't.

8th Graders could play up until we went to 4 teams from each district in the playoffs back around the '91 season. Where I went to HS I know a couple of people that played as 8th graders and even 1 7th grader. One of the 8th graders started. Also I believe the rule on 8th graders playing is no varsity sports and they can not play in JV games if either team has a Jr participating. They can play basketball and baseball though.

You're right, 33, by what we have established today. Used to teams had to play 8th graders to be either: a.) competitive or b.) have enough bodies to play. Nice clarification on the JV/Juniors issue. Thanks.

Knox Central and Williamsburg will participate in a three-team scrimmage to cap off pre-season play today at Knox Central High School.

 

So who is the other team joining the Panthers and the Yellow Jackets?

 

Tom Larkey’s Harlan County Black Bears.

 

“This should be interesting,” Knox Central coach Wayne Mills said. “They’ve got around 90 players and we’ve never had to go up against a team with that many players, so it’s going to be exciting for us.”

 

Mills said he expects his team to get a good challenge from both Harlan County and Williamsburg.

Just talked to a friend that went to the game and said that during the varsity portion of the scrimmage Harlan County outscored Knox Central 14-6.

 

I'm sure that Mama Bear will have a full report for us when she gets back.

They scored with 9 seconds left in that portion of the scrimmage. Gilliam is so fast. Wow! Lot's of kids were on and off the field tonight. I can't wait to get a roster to know who we are looking at. The bear's looked good. When they all came marching into that stadium, I got goose bumps. Tonight they dressed everybody and I think most everybody played. I thought the crowd was even awe struck by the sheer amount of kids. I'm sure Larkey will fine tune any weaknesses he saw tonight.

 

The Williamsburg portion of the scrimmage was played against mostly JV and Freshmen. The Black Bear's have talent. Coach Larkey will use it. I thought we had a really big crowd for a scrimmage.

 

Knox Central has nice facilities.

Wow, that is a staggering number and speaks well of the tremendous enthusiasm, surround this program.

Letcher Central is going to get invaded next weekend.... wow!

Well they weren't all HC fans, but HC had the majority. 4,500 is just an estimate but the entire belachers were jam packed and they were people lined 1-2 deep around the back side of the track as well as a line formed around the concession area about 2 deep. This was just a 20 minute scrimmage between HC and KC by the way. I'd say HC had the ball around 14 minutes out of 20.

I think 2500 would be more like it, there were plenty of seats on the side where KC fans were, HC fans far out numbered the fans from both Wburg and KC. It was a great turnout for a grid.

I wanted to take a moment to give Mama Bear a huge high paw, what you were able to get done on the donation for the building of the football stadium was just over the top, great job and a big ata boy to Black Mt. Resourses and GM Ross Kegan.:dancingpa
