In REALITY, the vast majority of our players are--and have always been--home grown. That's what a feeder system is all about...and we have a great one! :thumb:

No, not really is English for not really, as in we really don't draw players from all over N. Ky. And you are right, we don't get "all" of the players from Ft. Thomas. Just a very large majority of them come from our 7 square mile little town. Shame we didn't get Flynn; wasn't he from Boone County?

For the record Josh Conner has lived in Ft. Thomas since his freshman year.

I read most of the article and thought it was very good. I was looking at those historical teams and was quite surprised to see some of the names but many household names.

 

I remember when I was in school they had some studs in Paul Hladon, Dave Legeay, Scott Tranter, Dan Ruh, Mike Woolf, etc. That was a loaded team for the Colonels.

 

As far as players being drawn to one school or another I dont think it is even close when you look at the amount of kids CCH can get from the Catholic schools and also the surrounding Public schools. CCH has the same quality program that could attract a public school child who might be in Beechwoods, or Campbell Co's school district through grade school but decide they want to attend CCH. Just as you might get someone who lives in Newport which is right on the border of Ft. Thomas.

It really isn't a myth. I remember a few coming from Kenton County high schools.

Not really. We occasionally get several players outside of Ft. Thomas (even some disgruntled CovCath players every now and then:D), but if you want to compare the number of players you've received from outside a seven square mile area surrounding CovCath with the number of players that we've received from outside of Ft. Thomas over the last 20 years, I'll start making my list.

 

The only two that I can think of this year are Conner and Ted Abner. Conner as you pointed out lives in Newport and Abner lives in Kenton County. Teddy's father is a Highlands grad. The place of Abner's residence is a testament to whom wears the pants in that family (sorry Ted. I didn't want to type that but my fingers wouldn't listen to me. Besides, if I didn't type it, Jim or Mick would have anyway. :D)

Josh Conner does not live in Newport. He lives in FT.Thomas

Also, Back in the day (early '80's) Cov Cath wasn't the rivalry, New Cath was. It wasn't just the neighborhood rivalry like CovCath/Beechwood. It determined whether you went to the playoffs. That was when both were in AAA and there were sub-districts. If Highlands lost to NC they weren't going to the playoffs at all.

Flynn was indeed from Boone County, and was a heck of a player.

 

But nobody is claming CovCath doesn't get kids from Boone County. Ernst's article made the claim Highlands gets it's players from a small community. Unless Independence, Newport, Sivler Grove, and Alexandria are part of the Ft. Thomas community, the Birds do draw from all over NKY.

 

Again, I'm not bashing Highlands. It's a good cycle to be in, the success draws good players which results in more success.

I don't know the guy they listed for CCH at the TE position but if he was better than Jeff Drees at making plays then he was the real deal.

Cath. at the time. What does everyone else think?

I agree. When NC was 3A with Highlands it was not only a rivalry but it had playoff implications. The CCH rivalry probably started in the mid 80s.

Although I am not involved with this rivalry I loved reading the article. Games like this one with all schools everywhere in this state are what make High School football so special. I know in our area there is Ashland/Boyd Co., Russell/Ashland, Raceland/Fairview and a long standing Ashland/Ironton,Oh. rivalry. Although these may not be on the same scale as this one (Ashland/Boyd may be) they are special as well.

More than a few of the NC kids back in those days would have played for CCH if they'd have had a team? NC used to get quite a few kids from Kenton County then as I recall.
