How's Bracken County's Middle School team looking this season? Had a nice little season last year.

Campbell County scrimmaged Pendleton this morning at CCMS. The Camels started slow but were looking real good before the 2nd team came in. Cody Canady was running the ball very well. Both O line and D line were holding their own. Nate McGovney had a real nice interception. It will be interesting to see how this team comes together. There is a lot of athleticism but depth could be an issue.

 

As for Pendleton, they did not have many players but they played tough. #48 ran the ball very well.

I'm interested in Summit View Middle school in NKY. Any news? I believe the program started around 2001. I thought I read the coach moved to Scott as the freshman coach.

 

Yesterday we had what we call the county scrimmage. Twenhofel, Summit View, Turkeyfoot and Woodland all scrimmaged each other on the same day. This is the 2nd year for this scrimmage. This is held on Twenhofels new football field. What they do is divide the field in half and have 2 teams start on the 35-40 yrd line on one side of the field and have the other 2 teams start on the 35-40 yrd line on the other side of the field. That way they have 4 teams scrimmaging on the same field at the same time. Each team gets 10 minutes of offense and 10 minutes of defense in each scrimmage.

 

 

Summit View-Gonna be a tough year for Summit View. Their numbers looked down compared to last years team. Couldn't get much going on offense and had lots of trouble stopping anyone on defense. Some of the 8th graders were asked/allowed to play for Scott's freshmen team this year. This really seems to be hurting Summit View. Could be a long year for them. They were 0-3 in the scrimmages.

 

Turkeyfoot-Kids look very big but surprisingly they don't seem to be as good as last years team. Moved the ball decently on offense but struggled on defense. I do look for these kids to get better as the year progresses. They were 1-2 in the scrimmages.

 

Woodland-This school did not win a game last year and only won one the year before. Different coaching staff this season and it shows in their play. They moved the ball well against Turkeyfoot and SVMS, not against Twenhofel (I'll get to them in a minute). There defense looked surprisingly good. They beat up on Summit View and Turkeyfoot pretty good. This is not the same Woodland team of the past couple of years. Very well coached team. They went 2-1 in the scrimmages.

 

Twenhofel-Looked nothing short of awesome. Maybe the best defense I have seen the past couple of years in Middle School. Woodland and Summit View did not gain one positive yard in their respective scrimmages against Twenhofel. These kids are fast and hit really hard. They do play 8 men in the box and are vulnerable to big plays but these kids tackle well. Turkeyfoot was the only team who scored off of a couple of big plays. TMS looked good on offense as well, running and passing. This team is gonna be tough to beat this year. They were dominate, 3-0 in the scrimmages.

 

 

They play the "B" teams (mostly 6th and 7th graders) scrimmages on Twenhofels practice field with the same format. Sorry, I don't have a report on the B-team scrimmages.

Man I heard they had a ton of kids come out. I think its a good thing to get a middle school program going over there.

 

Does anyone know if CovCath had so many kids come out that they are actually fielding 2 middles school teams this year? We have CovCath(2) on our schedule. Was thinking the (2) meant there were more than 1 CovCath team.

Burns Middle School in Owensboro, KY feeds Apollo High School. In 32 years, the eighth grade team has had 11 undefeated seasons 14 one game loss seasons. Not against slack talent either. They play every year Owensboro Middle, Henderson schools among others. Last years seventh grade was 8-0, and they are looking for another undefeated eighth grade year.

 

I doesn't seem to translate over into the high school, however. Apollo usually has decent teams, but they've won four playoff games in their history and have only been to a regional final once in their history (2001).

Carroll County went 1-7 last year and are currently 2-0 out of the gate with wins over Gallatin County (48-28) and Madison, Indiana (14-8). Looking good.

Another very good running back in the Fort Thomas Jr. Football League Middle school division is Mason Meyers. He runs very hard and is fast with nice size. I know he is in St. Mary's school district but its anybody's guess where he may go to High School. Brossart? NCC? Highlands?

I don't know how it turned out, but Mayfield 8th was leading Ballard Co. 30-0 after the first quarter and Jonathan Jackson had "helped" 4 Ballard players end the evening early.

Campbell County Middle School opens their season Saturday vs Cov Cath #2 at Sharp at 12:30.

 

Does anyone know are the Cov Cath teams evenly split or is there and A and B team?

South Laurel 8th grade defeated Corbin 14 to 6. Great win for the Cards...

I caught parts of the 7/8th grade Red/Black game up at Highlands High School today in the FTJRFL's opener. Colin Dupont looked very fast at QB for the black team and Mason Meyers looked to be churning up the yardage as well. As far as the Red team goes, they have a very fine reciever in David Christian who scored 2 TD's off throws from Jake Lester. One was a nice hitch where he came back to the ball, shook off a tackler and scampered 60 yrds for a score, showed his wheels. Future looks bright for the Birds. Not sure if Meyers will be a Bird but we can sure hope.

Newport beat Turkeyfoot 8 to 0 today. Newport scored early in the game on a pass from #2 to #40 which went for about 55 yards. Newport's defense was impressive with a strong front and a core of linebackers that kept coming. Newport's offense was good but had some problems up front but I'm sure the coaches will work it out. Turkeyfoot wasn't has aggressive as they were last season but I believe as the season goes they will be a force to deal with.
