Yes, if they were better than the other 110 teams, they would be elite. If there are 50 teams better than them than they aren't elite. These lists are simply historic teams.

 

Ha ha, are you serious? It's like I said, if Western Kentucky, or Akron was in the top 10 this season they would be elite? do you know what elite stands for? It's not based on one season.

 

:lol::lol::lol: that is what makes "Elite" teams..... some have good season every few years or so and end up being ranked for that one year and then some are amoung the top every year. That is what makes elite.....a "History" of being amoung the top EVERY year along with multiple conference and/or national titles to their "History and Tradition". Yep, some are historic....

I hadn't forgotten those, as I have not forgotten the slew of years that their record was around or below .500 in the late '80s and early '90's.

 

Texas football was fantastic in the '60s, very ho/hum in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's.

 

Since the late 90's they have been very successful and that has put them back on everyones radar.

70 I didn't look it up. Close enough. Point is that Johnny come lately had 3 titles in a short span.

 

And then promptly reeled off almost two decades worth of .500 football. From '84 to '97(15 seasons) they had two 10-2 seasons and SIX seasons at .500 or below, with multiple seasons at one or two wins above .500.

 

Texas has an argument to be an elite team, but IMO they are on the fringe at best.

Do you guys think that a large fan following has anything to do with having elite status? If it does, there is no question about teams like Florida St, Miami, and Texas. And it seems like everyone has a Notre Dame hat.

I believe they were independent. I know that Penn State and Notre Dame was(ND still is) for sure. I think they were independent but I could be wrong. If they werent ind, what conference could they have been in? It wasnt the SEC or the Big East and not the ACC until the early 90's, so Im pretty sure they were independent!:thumb:

I must say looking into FSU football history I think I have changed my mind and they should be considered an elite program. With a post-season record of 20–13–2, and an all-time record of 450–215–17 (.677). Also their first season was 1947, so they have not been around as long as ND, PSU, Mich, OSU, USC, Tenn, Bama, so on.

Since 2002 we have averaged 6 losses in a season.

 

Elite? Tradition only. But the best tradition.

It's insane to mention someone who has touched down in the top 10 for the first time in school history or for the first time in 40 years to be called elite. USC, Ohio State, Oklahoma are elite. You see them at the top year in and year out, and not to mention the combined 21 National Championships of just those three alone. That to me is elite.
