The election results tell a different story but enough about arrogant John Kerry. Let's resume the discussion about Obama's arrogance. Liberal politicians played no positive role in bringing down the Berlin Wall and Obama speaking there would make him look like a five-year old dressed up in his daddy's suit.

 

JFK and Ronald Reagan both played positive roles in keeping West Berlin free and bringing down the wall. and both made courageous speeches in West Berlin in defiance of evil. JFK and Reagan earned their places in German history and Obama thinks that delivering an empty campaign speech in Berlin will earn him a similar place in history. It won't.

What role did Reagan play in keeping West Berlin free? They were never threatened during his time, at least with a threat any greater than other European areas. He made a great speech that inspired them all but what else? What did Reagan do to help Poland and Solidarity? I appreciate Reagan's legacy but I would rather credit the resolve of the German people more than the work of American politicians.

 

Look, Truman did as much as any of the others to keep West Berlin free. (Marshall Plan ring a bell?) He was considered a liberal by many based on his handling of Korea and his desegregation of the military.

 

JFK stood in Berlin and spoke of liberty but he was criticized by Hawks for allowing the wall to go up in the first place.

What Obama does not seem to understand is that the Brandenburg Gate is something you earn. President Ronald Reagan earned the right to speak there because his relentless pressure had brought the Soviet empire to its knees and he was demanding its final "tear down this wall" liquidation. When President John F. Kennedy visited the Brandenburg Gate on the day of his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, he was representing a country that was prepared to go to the brink of nuclear war to defend West Berlin.

On today's political scale, Truman, Kennedy, and most other pre-Watergate Democrats would fall into the conservative or moderate category. Liberals who shared views similar to Obama (Kerry comes to mind) actively and vehemently opposed policies such as those pursued by Reagan, which IMO, eventually freed the East German people of the yoke of communism.

 

I understand that liberal politicians would like to take some credit for the fall of the Soviet Union but I do not see how the opinion that I expressed is in any way deceptive. What liberal policies do you believe helped dissolve the Iron Curtain? Do you think that unilateral nuclear disarmament, as advocated by John Kerry and other liberals during the Reagan adminstration or the other deep cuts in US military spending made or proposed, such as the ones made by Jimmy Carter played a role in toppling the Soviet regime? Had liberals such as Kerry and Kennedy been successful in thwarting Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative program - would that have hastened to fall of the Berlin Wall?

 

Please point out the great liberal foreign policy initiatives of the 60's. 70's. and 80's that played a positive role in combatting communism. For the most part, liberals allowed Reagan to rebuild our military to put pressure on the Soviets to keep pace only in exchange for expanding domestic social welfare programs. They were part of the problem not part of the solution.

Obama is a public figure running for the most important office in the free world. Hitler put a lot of Germans to work and restored national pride to his countrymen. However, nothing that he could possibly have accomplished could have washed the blood of six million Jews from his hands. Similarly, abortionists kill an average of 3,000 humans each day. There is not much that they can do in my eyes to atone for that evil.

They also elected another socially moderate Republican, William Weld, a few years ago. Both men would have had an easier time of being elected had they been more liberal.

 

Barney Frank was easily re-elected after it became public knowledge that his boyfriend was running a gay prostitution from the apartment that they shared. John Kerry has managed to hang on to his seat by doing nothing much but agree with the state's senior US Senator, Ted Kennedy. To the credit of both Frank and Kennedy, both are hard working and effective legislators. Like Obama, Kerry has been more talk than action during his tenure as US Senator.

How can you say that Obama has done nothing? Politically, yes, he may have achieved very little to this point. However, when you look at the fact the Obama is a mixed race person, who was raised in an era when mixed race children were looked down upon...To have achieved what he has is somewhat of a miracle. He earned his way through Harvard and was the first minority elected as head of the Harvard Law Review. He won the democratic nomination for President with the name Barack Hussien Obama. That alone is an accomplishment that should not be undervalued in this unabashedly judgmental nation that we live in. Maybe he shouldn't give a speech at this treasured area, however, it shouldn't be based on his lack of political accomplishments. And, for that matter, give me the name of one major legislation bill that John McCain has been central to in his 30 some years in the major political arena. And, yes, I know the man is a war hero...Move on. Shouldn't Obama be held as somewhat of a hero for overcoming his shortcomings and living the American dream...?
