Does BGP et al Affect Your Reading Ability?

Featured Replies

I have read more than one person who is having the same challenges I do when it comes to reading. I would guess that I'm "above average" when it comes to the number of books read. I've noticed that my ability to concentrate when reading books is getting worse. I was reading an article just yesterday where another person was experiencing the same problem and he attributed it to spending so much time reading blogs, online articles, and forums like BGP.

I would think there is something to it. Picture how you scan BGP. You quickly look at titles and then, often, skim through posts until you find something interesting and if that doesn't happen in a few seconds, you're off to another thread.

Ironically, I had to re-read the passage in this article a few times. I'm currently reading 3 books and I'm finding it to be more challenging each and every day.

Anyone else?

Yes, I find that my attention span is getting less and less as well. I never was a big reader but I would read books on my interest and such and enjoy those. I now find it hard to concentrate for very long on those, same with my fishing magazines and sports publications. I loved it could sit and read them cover to cover in a very short order, now I find myself skimming through them and just pickng out a couple of articles that sound interesting.

So, I am blaming mine on old age I could go on with some other examples but........... what did you say  and what were we talking about?.:D

Eh, tough to tell for me. I haven't had a book to read lately that I hadn't already read. When there's a book I'm really interested in you can't pry me away from it.

It hasn't bothered me, I don't think. I still read every chance I get.

As far as a short attention span, I don't.. Oh look, a rabbit!

Now here we go, I can relate. Weren't you guys in my h.s. literature class?

Not at all. I read books daily and I probably have gone through 10-20 so far at least this year. It hasn't affected my reading and/or comprehension one bit.

It does not affect me with books but while reading magizines I find myself skiping from atricle to article without reading them more often!

I probably read a little more than the average person. My "powers of concentration" aren't what they used to be; but I chalk it up to a concussion received in a car accident several years ago. I noticed a big difference in concentration and retention after that.:irked:

How much time in a day do you read online?

No, I have not had any problems in this area at all. I normally read three books at a time and when one is finished, pick up another. I keep three going at all times.

I finish a book a week usually. So, no, I do not find this a problem.

I do know that women can do more than men...maybe this is the reason. A women can listen to someone talk, watch tv and read all at the same time. A man can only do one of these things at once. Hmmmm.

My A.D.D. kicks in and it is all over!

By the way what were we talking about?? :D

Hasn't slowed me down.
