Does BGP et al Affect Your Reading Ability?

Featured Replies

I generally read 2-3 books a week. I start reading and I'm completely immersed! Now, watching TV or a movie is a different story altogether. I have a hard time staying concentrated then. But, books...I've used them as an escape since early, EARLY on in life. Get me started, and you could drive a Mack truck right past me in my house and I'd never know the difference.

For those that aren't having this problem, can you also give us an idea of how much time you spend online reading blogs, forums, and newspapers?

I have read more than one person who is having the same challenges I do when it comes to reading. I would guess that I'm "above average" when it comes to the number of books read. I've noticed that my ability to concentrate when reading books is getting worse. I was reading an article just yesterday where another person was experiencing the same problem and he attributed it to spending so much time reading blogs, online articles, and forums like BGP.

I would think there is something to it. Picture how you scan BGP. You quickly look at titles and then, often, skim through posts until you find something interesting and if that doesn't happen in a few seconds, you're off to another thread.

Ironically, I had to re-read the passage in this article a few times. I'm currently reading 3 books and I'm finding it to be more challenging each and every day.

Anyone else?

Maybe you should try only reading one book at a time, lol...that might help.

I read the several newspapers daily online the same way I do the print editions....looking for articles that interest me, and ignoring the rest.

Obviously, I spend an inordinate amount of time on BGP, but it's the only fourm board I actively read or participate on.

I don't regularly read any blogs except those which relate to my job, but do stumble upon some great ones now and again.

I usually spend several hours a week reading online versions of some magazines, in addition to reading the print versions of others. Frankly, when it comes to reading magazines, I generally perfer the print versions. I generally prefer the online versions of newspapers.

I read all the major news sites daily.

I randomly read the BBC.online, and several other foreign publication sites, like The Irish Times, and The Irish Independent, both out of Dublin.

I sometimes go to French websites to see how much I've retained from my 4 years of high school French. :D I actually do pretty well!

I've been venturing to Italian and Spanish sites to broaden my horizons.

How much time in a day do you read online?

Probably at least 1-2 hours on average sometimes more sometimes less.

I am on line a lot. And it has not changed my ability to read.

I read books at help me debate in P&R, so I have no problems. In fact, Aces Full recommended the one I just finished, and tomorrow I plan on starting a recommendation of Habib.

I was taught in college that if you're pressed for time, read only the 1st sentence in every paragraph. Of course, that assumes the writer you're reading knows how to properly set up paragraphs.
