June 18, 200818 yr It's a long drive, but the 10-inch (height, not diameter) meringue pies at Patti's 1880's Settlement in Grand Rivers are pretty good. A nice dessert to follow the 2-inch pork chop.
June 18, 200818 yr I am a pie guy over a cake guy. I like cakes, but I am insane for a good homemade pie. What about you guys? Me too. I usually ask for a blueberry pie for my birthday instead of a cake.
June 18, 200818 yr Me too. I usually ask for a blueberry pie for my birthday instead of a cake. Yep. I always ask for a pie...usually butterscotch.
June 18, 200818 yr My very own homemade apple pie. Oh, and I as covered in the sister thread to this one, cheesecake. Because cheesecake is really a cheese-based pie, not a cake.
June 18, 200818 yr Fellows, I know it may not be a pie in the strict sense, but one of my very favorites was my granny's or mom's homemade banana pudding. Seriously, is there anything much better than homemade banana pudding? My granny made it from scratch, even topped it with meringue.
June 18, 200818 yr Don, my papaw made one that was terrific. The Apple Barn's is okay. I knew when papaw had the apples drying on the screen downs laying out back that an apple stack cake was in our future. My granny's fried apple pies were greasy but out of this world. I bet you would had a half dozen of them, for starters. Some people use apple butter or applesauce when making them but granny used dried apples like my papaw used for the stack cakes. That is exactly the way my mother does it. My dad made her these hinged screen things to dry the apples on. She gets her apples from a tree at my late grandma's house. The apples only get about as big as a pool ball, but their a little tangy and the make the best pies I have ever eaten. I like them when there still a little warm.

Yep, just out of the oven with some ice cold milk. I still can't think of those screens w/o thinking of my mamaw and papaw.
