Bill Clinton's Presidency

Featured Replies

Pros

-Economic boom (Was along for the ride with no real input to this)

-Outstanding foreign policy record that included efforts to mediate peace between Israel & the Palestinians.(How did that work out?)

-Way better than average political skills. (Agreed)

-His policy toward gays in the military (Has not been an overall success, neither side happy with Don't ask, Don't tell)

Cons

-Left a decision on a national missile defense to his successor

-Failed National Health Plan

-Monica Lewinsky scandal

- Failed response to terrorism against America

-Could not determine false intelligence either, remember he thought Saddam had WMD's as well

Clinton also seems to have been at the right place at the right time, as much as Bush seems to have been at the wrong place at the wrong time as far as the economy goes.

I'm a little curious about that one. George the First was the one who raised taxes not long after Reagan was out. So how did that keep Reagan's economic policies going?

Can't remember but of course the raise in taxes was minor compared to the drop in rates Reagan pushed through. Top rate raised to 33 from 28? Also had to do with deregulating industries and spending on the military. I'll see if I can find what I was reading. I believe it was in the WSJ.

Created 2.1 million jobs

$167 Billion dollar surplus, (Where is that surplus now?)

Created a smaller government by eliminating 375,000 government jobs, Republicans should appreciate this! (BTW, GWB created 893,000 government jobs)

Lowest crime rate since 1967!

These are a few accomplishments!

The George tax hike is remembered because it came on the heels of his '88 election promise, "Read my lips, no new taxes." It elected him and then he had to renig on the deal once in office.

I find that an interesting one. It's true that while in office the violent crime rate went down in the country. How much of that had to do with him I don't know but I'm sure if we were hailing anyone's accomplishments that would have to be listed as happening "under the watch."

Clinton worked with Congress and instituted the first Welfare reforms in many years.

Actually he vetoed it twice before signing it into law. When he realized he couldn't stop it from being passed he suddenly changed to be in favor of the legislation so he could take credit for it. Looks like his strategy worked.

Actually my memory recalls that he worked with the GOP after promising during his campaign to address Welfare reform. He vetoed the other bills because he did not agree with them then approved the one that was closer to what he wanted.

I am not very familiar with that, but finally someone brings something up. It sounds to me like a good program, and if I understand the gist of it, it allows tax incentives for companies that hire workers that live and work in areas that aren't doing too well? This seems like an excellent idea. :thumb: Anything with tax incentives sounds good to me.

BTW, big surprise that an empowerment zone is in CLINTON county :p:p :D

For what it's worth, Clinton County has nearly four registered Republicans to every one registered Democrat.

A president can't cause expansion or end a recession but he can certainly affect the length of them. It is not that Reagan caused expansion; rather, if Carter's high taxation had continued, then the economy would have been in worse shape. Higher taxes, as enacted by Bill Clinton, would have been detrimental to the economy. However, he got a free pass because he benefited from 8 years of no recessions (which is unheard of in an economy like ours).

And it is not like I dreamed it up on my own- my belief in this stems from an article I read by Glenn Hubbard (although I can't for the life of me find it). But I don't see it as a generalization. You have to understand how incredibly large computers and the internet really are in our economy, and think of in how short of a period of time they came in place.

Why in the world would the former Atlanta Braves second baseman know anything about economics?

In all seriousness, if I remember correctly, didn't law enforcement agencies on the state and local levels all enjoy major injections of federal money to help upgrade their technology, vehicles and other resources during Dollar Bill's time?

Why not, Lenny Dykstra, Wayne Rogers, and Ben Stein are supposedly investment gurus?! (Rogers and Stein seem pretty sharp in money matters but Lenny not so much.)
Clinton wasn't responsible (at all) for the growth of the economy, so I can't give him credit for it.

The "internet boom" is not over (poor wording on my part) but it has certainly slowed down, and a lot of the immediate economic benefits that came from the beginning of it are harder to find.

The internet boom is slowing down? Are you serious?

The internet bubble burst near the end of Clinton's second term and dragged the stock market down with it. The industry has since recovered pretty well, but there is no disputing that internet stocks were over valued during the 90's.

1. Probably a result of NAFTA (as already mentioned), but nonetheless a positive.

2. I wonder how he did that- dismantling the military? I am actually unsure.

3. :thumb: Great point

4. I am not sure if he deserves credit for that, but possible
