Duncan Tavern, an imposing three-story structure built in 1788, reputedly hosted such guests as Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, and Samuel Adams. Duncan Tavern is now the state headquarters for the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the home of one of the finest genealogical libraries in the state. John Fox, Jr., for whom the library is named, is buried in the Paris Cemetery and carries the distinction of being the first American author to sell more than a million copies of his book: The Little Shepherd of Kingdom http://www.parisky.org/A%20History.html

May 16, 200818 yr My family sold the land Carter Caves was located on to the state for $1, they recently named the lodge in our honor "Lewis Caveland Lodge".......I think the state ripped us of, I'm going to appeal that's my bit of history!

That Meeting was also the beginning of what is termed the 2nd Great Awakening in America. (Jonathan Edwards began the first in the early 18th century)
May 16, 200818 yr I lived in Orange County, Virginia for 9+ years before moving to Martinsville, VA. In Orange: Home place of James Madison (Montpelier), President and leader of the Bill of Rights. On the East end of the County is where the Battle of the Wilderness began in 1864. The church I pastored there was founded as an illegal assembly (Baptist and not Anglican) in 1774. The sanctuary was built in 1830 complete with slave door and balcony. Orange was also the birthplace of Zachary Taylor and later home to the ancestor who had him "dug up" and checked for poisoning.
May 16, 200818 yr Owsley County is the boyhood home and birth place of New York Yankee HOF outfielder and .300+ hitter Earle Combs. He was raised in an area called Pebworth on route 11 between Booneville and Beattyville. Also, Daniel Boone camped in Owsley County and owned land there. The county seat, Booneville, is named for him.
May 16, 200818 yr Owensboro was the site of the last legal public execution in the United States. Over 20,000 people were on hand to witness the hanging of Rainey Bethea for the rape and murder of a 70 year old woman. More info if interested.
May 16, 200818 yr When the the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge in Covington was completed in 1866, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world with a length of 1067 feet. It remained the longest until 1883 when Roebling completed the Brooklyn Bridge in which he used the Covington bridge as a prototype.
