May 16, 200818 yr Very solid analysis. :thumb: Thanks, I try to be realistic. I'd love to pick 9-3 or 10-2 but I just can't see it. To me this is a heck of an improvement in the level of UK's program. Before with the kind of losses to graduation that they incurred they'd be looking at a 1 or 2 win season. I think that their talent level, coaching and overall attitude has progressed to where they expect and are able to win against middle to lower tier SEC teams like Vandy and Arkansas at home and spring an occasional upset. That may not be much to some people but it has been a quantum leap for UK.
May 16, 200818 yr Thanks, that's what I thought. To me that eliminates any advantage had between the two backfields as well. Bolen had almost as many carries as Locke and more than Smith or Dixon. EKU05 I don't know how you can say that UK's backfield is more reliable than UL's. Locke had a nice year as a change of pace back but has to prove that he can carry the load as a feature back. As for Dixon he missed 2 games due to injuries and was benched during at least 2 more with fumbling problems--hardly reliable. As for Smith he only managed 21 carries in 5 games--again hardly reliable. I'd have to call this matchup at best even but if Bolen stays healthy I'd give the edge to UL here as well. For arguement's sake how many carries did Allen and Powell have last year? Stats? I know Powell really stepped up towards the end of the year to take over as the feature back. Bolen is tough..and to be honest I completely forgot him. But it is also important to remember, this UL team is going to be very young up front in the season opener. UK will be very experienced and be led by one of the SEC's elite linemen in Williams. That youth will DEFINATELY play a major role in the effictiveness in UL's running game. As for the QB.. you are probably right that the edge possibly is bigger than I initially posted. But I reinterrate, when Cantwell was back there before he had ALOT more weapons to throw to and a much better line to protect him. Don't discount the difference that makes. Look at UK last year for example. Apparently in the eyes of all UL fans and NFL scouts Andre Woodson wasn't nearly as good of a QB as Brohm, yet he put up just as good if not better numbers thanks to the weapons he had at his disposal.

May 22, 200818 yr The tough thing about an SEC schedule is that a team can improve and still lose more games than last year. Still, Coach Brooks has been a straight shooter with us and he thinks his defense will be much improved and his offense will still be good. I'm not sure where they'll come from, but I'll take 8 wins.
May 22, 200818 yr Speaking of UK defense, I'm told that Luke McDermott, a walk-on from Trinity, now weighs 260 and is projected to be a second string defensive end in the fall, which would be his second year in college. I cannot vouch for the source but am curious whether this could be true. Can any bleed-blue folks amplify on this?
