It had always been the player that decided before, but the reason they changed their policy of letting the player decide is because of Wade Boggs. Word got out that part of the contract he signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was that if he were to be inducted into the HOF, he would ask for a Tampa hat instead of a Red Sox or Yankee hat. Worried that this would set an ugly precedent, they changed the rule.

October 2, 200817 yr Trade Thompson, Maloney, Stubbs...basically what it takes for Matt HollidayI doubt that would be enough ... if the Rockies are going to trade their best hitter and one of their most popular players, they're going to want a young player with a major league track record, someone like a Volquez, Cueto or a Votto.

No one knows if the guys you mention are even in the Reds' immediate plans, so there's no reason to expect a team to give a proven star/MVP candidate to get them. Given how weak the west is, the Rockies feel like they're in position to contend next year. That is one of the reasons they didn't move Holliday at the trade deadline, and they don't want to take the PR hit they would get by trading their best and most popular player for "prospects."

October 2, 200817 yr Merker won't be back because of his back. Heard an interview with him the last week of the season on the pre-game show and he stated his doctor said his back cannot take the stress anymore. He basically said he wasn't going to retire but just kind of fade away. I don't see Walt giving Patterson another 3 mil. to hit lead-off and bat .210 or less, no matter what Dusty thinks of him. Either Freel or Hopper will be gone, same type of player basically for one spot and Hairston has earned a roster spot. Freel would be the logical choice to be sent elsewhere because of his contract, the same contract that they will either have to eat or keep him around. I could see Walt packaging Bailey and at least 2 others to get a big right-hand bat or a quality catcher. With the way Thompson, Ramierez, and Maloney pitched this year, I see Bailey as odd man out because of the way he pitched and everyone knows you have to give up something to get something.
