May 5, 200818 yr Going to Memphis the 4th of July week for AAU tournament. Any things to see or do or things not to do? Anything good for kids to do when not playing basketball? We are actually staying in West Haven Mississippi.
May 6, 200818 yr Zoo is really good. We went several years ago when they had just opened a new big cat facility. It is the best big cat area I have ever saw. Downtown is cool just to walk around. Graceland not so much.
May 6, 200818 yr Author Not too interested in Graceland. But thinking about a cruise on one of the boats down the river.
May 6, 200818 yr Watch yourself.............. Memphis is the 13th most dangerous city in the US and having been 2 times.......well my experiences were not good. South side is brutal. We stayed at a descent hotel and had "working girls" knock on our door, and there was someone shot outside about 4am. No more AAU trips for us to Memphis

No more AAU trips for us to Memphis I have never stayed in Memphis, but I did stay near Memphis one time and thought I was going to have to fight a couple of homeless guys because there was a short time when it appeared they were going to gang me and steal my wallet. I would recommend just be smart and not be in any dangerous sections of town at night.
May 6, 200818 yr Never been to Memphis, but I have traveled quite a bit with my daughters's sports teams. Why would they choose such a dangerous place for families to go to?
May 6, 200818 yr I ve been to a tourney in Memphis. 1st thing to avoid is the super human athletes that you are going to face in the Tourney. One team had eight dunker's in a 13 and under tournament.:scared::eek: We stayed close to the airport and had several bad experiences in that location. Also make sure you know where you are going, We got lost several times in an area not too safe to ask for help. I actually liked graceland and I'm not a big elvis guy.
May 6, 200818 yr Never been to Memphis, but I have traveled quite a bit with my daughters's sports teams. Why would they choose such a dangerous place for families to go to? Competition is unreal, we wanted to see what we had against superior competition. That being said I'm never going back.
May 6, 200818 yr I'd call the Memphis basketball office and try to set something up to see the Pyramid or watch the team do individual workouts... They may say no, but if they assigned a manager to show you around, that could be pretty cool considering the season they just had. You never know until you ask.
May 6, 200818 yr It's a very rough town, one night on the way home from Tunica, I couldn't keep my eyes open, stopped at a motel 6 and going up the steps to my room, 4 dudes started chasing me, luckily i got to my room just in time...Like literally they were 5 ft behind me when I slammed the door shut!

Just depends on what part of town you are in, if you stay on the MS side in Desoto County, or in Germantown on the Tennessee side it can be very pleasant.

Germantown :thumb: very nice part of town but there are some very rough parts. I love this one car dealer on the south side, its name "It's All Good" auto sales.
May 6, 200818 yr Having gone to Memphis a few times, it is a dangerous city, but it offers a lot of cool traditions and history. Mud Island is worth while.
May 6, 200818 yr Just echoing other's sentiments that I would be very hesitant about where I was going especially at night. The one thing you do want to do is get some of Memphis' fine barbecue...yummmmmmmm
