I was the first one on here to say that PETA would be up at arms after the race. PETA does some good and important things.

I would say with confidence that most PETA members are no bigger idiots than those who elected George Bush as president.

PETAns are morons. And I will paint with that broad brush because if you are stupid enough to be a member of an organization that would take this stance then you are not intelligent.

We hosted a PETA cookout to drum up membership in our town once. We offered free hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and BBQ. We didn't have any new members sign up.

Caught a few minutes of an interview with Randy Moss (no, not THAT Randy Moss, but the ESPN horse guy) who actually said that he thought PETA didn't go far enough. His main point of emphasis was "race-day medications"; a practice that he said should be abolished.

 

He did state that there were 9 polysurfaces in the US, and that the move toward them was a major step in the right direction.

 

I'd have to agree with doomer - let's hope that PETA's extremism doesn't in and of itself blind us to problems in the industry.

My stepmother is a real big horse freak. Her and my father have like 30 horses. lol She says from the way the horse looked when it was running early in the race, something was already wrong. She suspects they doped to the horse up to run the race.

I would like to know what your stepmother thought she saw early in the race. If the horse was not right she would have broke down early and certainly would have not finished second.

banked turns - according to a friend that knows stuff about horse racing, the stress on turns, combined with the young horses is a contributing factor to breakdowns.

 

Breeding is the main reason. People are breeding horses for speed not stamina.

Its not that the horse had already broken its ankles, its the fact that with the ability to drug a horse up on race day the horse could have raced through some stress or pain. Then if the horse began to favor the ankle a jockey would now to stop the horse. I in no way agree with PETA or the way they go about things. Its just a shame that this tradgedy has overshadowed Big Brown's victory.

I agree with them PETA is a sham. A peta leader was quoted on the radio today comparing the Holocaust in Germany to the number of chickens eaten each year.....by the way he said the billions of chickens killed was worse than the millions of Jews.

DON'T BE FOOLED by the slick propaganda of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The organization may claim to champion the welfare of animals, as the many photos of cute puppies and kittens on its Web site suggest. But last week, two PETA employees were charged with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty each, after authorities found them dumping the dead bodies of 18 animals they had just picked up from a North Carolina animal shelter into a Dumpster. According to the Associated Press, 13 more dead animals were found in a van registered to PETA.

 

The arrest followed a rash of unwelcome discoveries of dead animals dumped in the area. According to veterinarian Patrick Proctor, the PETA people told North Carolina shelters they would try to find the dogs and cats homes. He handed over two adoptable kittens and their mother, only to learn later that they had died, without a chance to find a home, in the PETA van. "This is ethical?" Proctor railed over the phone. "I don't really think so."

 

This is not the first report that PETA killed animals it claimed to protect. In 1991, PETA killed 18 rabbits and 14 roosters it had previously "rescued" from a research facility. "We just don't have the money" to care for them, then PETA-Chairman Alex Pacheco told the Washington Times. The PETA animal shelter had run out of room.

 

The Center for Consumer Freedom, which represents the food industry, a frequent target of PETA campaigns, released data filed by PETA with the state of Virginia that shows PETA has killed more than 10,000 animals from 1998 to 2003. "In 2003, PETA euthanized over 85 percent of the animals it took in," said a press release from the lobby, "finding adoptive homes for just 14 percent. By comparison, the Norfolk (Va.) SPCA found adoptive homes for 73 percent of its animals and Virginia Beach SPCA adopted out 66 percent."

 

The Center's David Martosko considered PETA's hefty budget -- reportedly, $20 million -- and many contributions from well-heeled Hollywood celebrities, then figured, "PETA has enough money in the bank to care for every unwanted animal in Virginia (where it has its headquarters) and North Carolina."

 

PETA prefers to spend donations, apparently, not caring for flesh-and- blood animals entrusted to it but on campaigns attacking medical researchers, meat-eaters or women wearing furs. It is as if PETA prefers the idea of animals to animals themselves.

I hate PETA.

 

There is something more going on than we know though. NO WAY the horse breaks BOTH its ankles AFTER the cool down lap and no signs before.

 

I love horse racing but changes need to be made or it will get nasty.

I am not saying you are wrong or your stepmother is wrong but I find it hard to believe. Things like that happen a lot in horse racing but not in this big of a race. Eight Belles was a promising young filly with a bright future ahead of her. If she was hurt she would not have raced because she had a bright future to win races just as big as the Derby (Purse wise). High end race horses will not be forced to race if they are hurt like lower claiming horses will because of breeding after their career.
