I have heard a lot of conspiracy theorist since Saturday saying, "There is no way both ankles broke at the same time. There must have been an earlier injury that was being masked with drugs or some other nefarious activity was at hand." That is all a bunch of bull!!!

 

IMVHO I think that during the run out after the race she sustained an injury to one ankle that prevented her from carrying any weight on that leg and when she went to set the other leg that it was with such force in an awkward manner that it cause the second injury. It may not have happened this way but I feel this is much more plausible than some of the stuffed being spewed by PETA and others of their ilk.

That's what I was thinking, if one ankle went down when both were in full health, it would greatly increase the stress on the other making it very easy for injury to occur on both.

We live in a world where animals are treated better than humans. We live in a world where abusing animals carry a harsher sentence than abusing another human. And it's one of the reasons why our nation is circling the toilet.

Our State legislators are trying to find ways to fund education and still provide all the services we are used to. I just wonder what the dollar amount spent on every horse raised in this state is compared to what is spent on every teacher!

I made the comment to a co-worker yesterday that I can blow out my knee and take meds to lessen the pain but there is no way I am going to be as fast as a healthy me.

Thats great but do they perform as well as normal? I know Schilling pitched fine but I do remember him laboring to cover first base on groundballs to the right side.

The stat that was given on ESPN today was that 1.6 out of every 1,000 thorobred starters is put down due to race-day injury in this country. While that doesn't sound like a lot, how many starts will, for example, a Churchhill Downs, Keeneland or Turfway have in a season - how many race days, how many races each day and how many starters in each race?

 

Not the best odds when there's even money that I'll have to be put down after three years on the job.

 

Actually, the correct number is anywhere from 1.6 to 2.03 catastrophic on-track injuries occur for every 1,000 races run.

 

Keeneland runs about 31-32 race days per year, with about 9-10 races per card.

 

Churchill runs about 12-14 weeks per year, five days per week, 9-10 races per day.

 

Turfway runs about 20 weeks per year, and Ellis Park in Henderson is about 6-7 weeks per year.

 

Keeneland and Turfway have both noticed decreases in the number of catastrophic on-track injuries since the instillation of polytrack.

As far as PETA is concerned, Larry Jones should come up with the quip, "I don't tell them how to throw ink at fur coats; they shouldn't tell me how to train horses."

She says(she has worked on ranches all her life) that you can get those kind of horses to endure anything with the right amount of drugs. Her ankles werent broken in the early race, but they were going that way fast; and her trainers probably knew this would happen.

 

I believe that this is so far wrong and "out there" that it deserves it's own category of ridiculous.

We have all got to realize something here. P.E.T.A. my not be responsible for their actions, these people are really just that stupid.

I would like to know what your stepmother thought she saw early in the race. If the horse was not right she would have broke down early and certainly would have not finished second.

I read in USA Today this morning where Larry Jones and Rick Porter requested drug tests for the necropsy to meet the question of drugs head on.

 

Guys like Larry Jones don't start out with 2 stalls and a couple horses--and years of barely eating unless they have some kind of concern about treating their animals the right way. If they were in it for the money .. they would have never been it to begin with.

 

If they find drugs in the horses system ... I would love to apologize. Until that point .. people are pointing fingers in the wrong direction. For as much as I went on about Barbaro ... I will say this ... all the right moves were made here. I am sure that the jockey will second guess himself for the rest of his life every time he feels a slight stumble.

 

My only comfort in this deal is that the horse passed on doing something that it was raised to do.

 

Also--kudos to NBC for minimizing the coverage of the actual breakdown. There is nothing about that that myself or anyone else needs to see.

 

Horseracing does need to step up to the plate (not to be reactionary). With all of the momentum going right night with things like this, combined with casinos that continue to pull from the gambling take--they need to continue to build a better, safer product.

Watch the Penn & Teller video. PETA has no problem paying legal fees defending people who firebomb research labs but they do not believe that people should own pets. There is even a clip of a PETA affiliated speaker showing a class how to make a bomb using a plastic milk jug, some gasoline, etc.

I think the rules should be changed to require a minimum jockey weight of 300 lbs. This would slow the speed of the horses and reduce the risk of injury.
