DETROIT - A 3-year-old girl found a gun in a bedroom of her home and shot herself in the head Sunday, police said.

One of the girl's parents apparently owned the gun, and at least one parent was home when she shot herself Sunday afternoon. Police questioned the parents and took the gun, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The girl was taken to Sinai Grace Hospital, then transferred to Children's Hospital of Michigan. The Detroit News reported she was in critical condition.

Disturbing.

How many times does that have to happen before people learn? Both her parents should be charged.

I disagree, it's a terrible accident. I don't think that punishing them is the right cause of action, I'm sure they didn't intend for this to happen. Sometimes kids just get in to things, should they have been watching a 3 year old a little closer definitely, but accident's happen.

This has nothing to do with watching a 3-yr-old. This is about criminal negligence in storing their firearm. The gun should have been locked in an unloaded and inoperable position and stored separately from the ammunition. It also should have been in a gun safe, or the very least, kept where a child couldn't get to it.

Well stated! If you're going to own a firearm, you need to respect and treat it like a firearm.

Exactly. Invest a hundred bucks in a minature safe. Or atleast buy one of the trigger locks and keep it unloaded.

People who leave their kids in a car in blazing hot temperatures don't intend for their children to die either, but they are still at fault.

Driving drunk and killing someone is a terrible accident also. But its still a crime.

True, the parents should be tried as idiots for not locking their firearm up

With ownership comes responsibility.

I disagree. There is no difference between not being responsible for a pet that kills a child vs. an unproperly stored firearm. If you own it, you are responsible for it.

:thumb:100% correct. This applies to gun ownership and being a parent.
