I hate to sound mean but is Eminence an elementry school?

I have never and will never like 3-inning mercy rule games.

 

As far as a game in which one team scores a profound amount of runs compared to the other...I think it is an even worse deal to tell your kids to swing and miss intentionally. If I were the opposing coach, it would offend me even more if they did that.

 

As far as the Anderson County pitcher, if he was the number 1, 2 0r 3, they should have taken him out after the second, maybe the first because a pitcher can still get the win with only one inning pitched if it was the intention of the coach to throw multiple pitchers. If the pitcher that was used was a JV pitcher, then I see no reason to take him out because you want to give him as many innings with the varsity as possible when you can and this would be the best way to do it.

 

Now with all of this being said, I do believe that 58 runs in one game is WAY too many. The only respectable thing that could have been done has already been mentioned....tell your players to only take one base at a time, don't steal, don't advance on a wild pitch or passed ball, and tell your guys that they can only advance multiple bases if anf only if they hit a homerun.

 

Whether or not the starting pitcher needs an inning to qualify for the win shouldn't have even been an issue, IMO. It's a completely meaningless win, so why put any emphasis on it?

 

I agree I would never ask a player to strike out intentionally, but there are simply other things you can do. You accurately named several of them. Telling kids they are not going to walk is another. Unless pitches are flying over the backstop or bouncing halfway in, when you are up by 4 TD's you swing at every AB. You can also tell players to work on things like hitting to the opposite field, which would likely help to limit their hitting somewhat. I would allow players to hit from the other side - as long as they looked reasonable doing so. (Having a player who obviously looks like he's never tried to swing opposite side would fall into the same category as intentionally missing pitches).

 

Bottomline is that 58 runs is unreasonable by any standard and, unless someone can prove otherwise, I don't think any real effort was made to control the score of this score. I hope the Anderson coach is hanging is head low today.

I wonder if Anderson has heard of JV playing after a score gets out of hand? Let those kids get into the game and gain some much needed experience. Letting this score get out of hand was uncalled for.

:thumb: How about working on BUNTING?!?! IMO there is nothing wrong with, when a runner walks gets a hit, etc. trying to bunt him over to 2nd, and then to 3rd, etc. If they are having trouble fielding and executing the out due to the bunt then you, as the coach, can always tell your guys to "ease up" down the line and focus on the placement of the bunt.

You really can't put all the blame on Anderson County in this case. How can a Coach allow his team to get beat this bad? I've coached Little League teams that could have made a better showing than that. It's also ridiculous that a coach would leave a pitcher in and let him get beat up on that bad. I'm sure that Anderson County and their coaching staff wasn't proud of this type of victory, but please, don't praise the effort by Eminence and their coaching staff as being anything more than lackluster at best. Maybe it's time to find a coach at Eminence who can teach kids some skills or maybe even better consider dropping Baseball as a competitive sport at Eminence. It's obvious from this effort that it is not a competitive sport now.

Maybe you can, but I can't and won't. Total humiliation to allow your team to get beat that bad at any level.

It appears as though Anderson Cty. HS has around 1100+ students, while Eminence has around 375 total for grades 5 through 12 (so I'm guessing they have 150-175 high school students).

I don't think it's that hard to be that bad with 375 kids in your whole school, which includes middle school. That's not even telling how many of those 375 are under grade 9 or female. It's amazing that they can even field a team, they should never be beaten like this.

Agreed they're not a big school, but could certainly be competitive at most levels. Several NKY schools including Beechwood, Ludlow, Bellevue, Brossart, Dayton, Walton-Verona, etc. are in that size range and are competitive at most sports, and quite good at many!!

Yes, something along those lines. I would go with 20 after 3, 15 after 4, and the normal 10 after 5.
