Shelby Valley will be a very good team coming out of Eastern Kentucky. Nearly everyone from the team returns as Juniors from a 20 win team who beat Louisville Male and Desales and acquitted themselves nicely in out of state play.

Don't think I'm trying to discredit Scott Co, because with or without the transfers they still have one of the state's best teams next year, but I just feel if a kid is going to transfer to another school for athletic reasons, even with a move of residence they still need to sit out a year.

Scott County should be the favorite, if Euton and/or Jackson and whomever are eligible.

 

Hazard might be a top-10 team if Whitaker and Warren stay in the fold. I would think Whitaker's father will get a head coaching job somewhere if he pursues one.

 

Elliott County returns virtually every key player, and a tougher schedule (I would think) would give them a little more seasoning.

 

Jeffersontown will have Aaron Cosby eligible next year, I presume, and should be ready to make a run. So will Manual with a lot of their top players back, and I'm sure Ballard and Male will be factors in the 7th, too.

 

Holmes has plenty coming back to make another run.

 

The best in the west will probably be Christian County. The Colonels return virtually everyone from a team that improved immensely throughout the season. Warren Central is supposed to be on the way back up after a young team took some lumps this year.

From the 9th Holmes will again be the favorite to return to Rupp with the return of Pittman and the Johnson brothers.

 

Scott Co will probably be the heavy favorite to win it all but only because of the transfers coming in.

Scott Co without a doubt has one of the best programs in the state. I just feel the KHSAA needs to step in and make these kids sit out a year who are moving and transferring just got athletic reasons.

 

Its not right for the kids who play by the rules and bust their tails all year long to be denied a chance at winning a state championship simply because a school has transfers coming in from around the state to keep their tradition alive.

I dont know the situation with Jackson completely, but no way you can think Euton should have to sit.

I have heard rumors on Whitaker, nothing firm though. I had heard he initially wanted to get out of coaching when he left Bell Co. and for sure when Josh graduated, so who knows what his plans are.

Henderson is the heart and soul of this Holmes team. It doesn't mean the Bulldogs won't have some significant young talent returning to ease the pain of his loss.

Maybe not applicable, since it's college, but Texas/Durant comes to mind.

I agree Holmes has some talented players returning, but it is hard to replace the passion that Henderson brought to this team. If an opponent started to score a lot, he would take it upon himself to switch over to defend that player to attempt to shut him down. I would suspect his teammate would not want this to happen, so the result is a high team effort.

Arrez is the heart and soul of that team. His defense will be greatly missed. HE has shut down some of the best over the past few years. (Profitt, SANFORD, Slone). Also nobody said the kid was "all world." But many around the state agree he is one of the top 5 players in the state hands down. Seems like you're the only one who has negative things to say about him. Last year you said the same things about Austin Hill and all he did was average 20 a game in the state tournament. Seriously your dislike of Holmes is very comical and childish with some of the remarks you make.

 

Also Holmes will be the favorite next year in the 9th. They return 3 starters from the state championship team and also have a 20-1 JV team coming up in which neither Johnson brother played a minute with. Riley who is probably a better PG and has a better shot than Avery will run the show next year. They also have a very good sophomore to be in 6'6 G Kevon Arnold as well as a 6'5 9th grader to be who will see varsity action. Henderson will be the only irreplacable player simply because of his lock down defense on the opposing teams best player. That job will go to Jeremiah Johnson next year probably.

LEXINGTON - Saturday night was not the Bulldogs' night.

 

But judging by the starting lineup the Holmes boys' basketball team rolled out in the state championship game, the Bulldogs might have their night in the next couple years.

 

Holmes, which lost 57-48 to Mason County in the Sweet Sixteen final at Rupp Arena, started three sophomores in the title game - Elijah Pittman and brothers Ricardo and Jeremiah Johnson.

 

"It's good to know we've got some young kids who can play," said Holmes coach David Henley. "And for them to be able to come here and experience what they've experienced, hopefully they got a taste of it and want to get back."

 

Ricardo Johnson and Pittman didn't merely play; they starred. Both made the all-tournament team. Pittman, who played junior varsity the entire season while coming off the varsity bench, averaged 14 points and four rebounds a game in the Sweet Sixteen. Ricardo Johnson, a varsity starter all season, averaged 10 points and five rebounds at Rupp.

 

The three returning starters will form the nucleus of next season's Holmes team, which will attempt to reach the state tournament for the fourth time in five years. The Bulldogs have reached the state semifinals the past two years, and Mason County coach Chris O'Hearn said he wouldn't be surprised if they kept the streak alive.
