The boys from Sandy Hook earned the respect of the crowd at Rupp and the state tonight.

 

Up 7 with four minutes to go in the game and momentum in an Elliot black jersey, it took three clutch 3-balls to bring the Royals back and put them in position to win the game.

 

Great effort from Elliot County tonight, congrats to the Royals.

 

Mason County lost a little respect though. Lexington Catholic is clearly the best team in the state and the unanimous choice to win it all.

 

Elliott County did show it can compete. Does anyone know Elliott County's record against top 25 teams this year?

 

Good season, EC will be back in the 16 next year especially with the transfer happening at RH.

 

Some folks did say PT could make it to the finals. It will be interesting for sure with Mason not clicking on all cylinders.

What an impressive performance by Elliott. They were, for me, by far the most fun team to watch in the tournament. Really disappointed they couldn't have drawn another team and advanced.

 

Great attitude on the part of their players. No complaining, trash talking, etc. They just play with joy and an obvious love of the game. A true team in every sense of the word.

 

I am sure E.C. and their fans are disappointed, but they should be very proud of their team and the effort they gave. Congratulations on a great season. Next year, you will definitely be in the hunt for the big trophy.

That was a great ball game. I don't think Miller really plays his tail off, but he did get the job done tonight. He did a great job drawing the defense and getting Setty some great open looks. He also got some huge offensive rebounds down the stretch. Elliott Co. really played their tails off. Like I said, great game.

 

I do believe Mason Co. will have their hands full with Paducah Tilghman.

I agree that Elliott proved to everyone across the state and all the Mason Fans that they can play with anyone and deserve their state ranking. Guess some people where wrong on their prediction of Mason by 20 or more. I knew that wasn't gong to happen. They will be back next year and should make alot of noise,

I agree about PT. They seemed VERY athletic and pretty good, but some of that can be contributed to how bad Greenwood was.

Ok, I just got in from the game, which means I've had a few minutes to think about what happened tonight. First, good job by Mason County. They hit the shots when they needed to and proved that they have been there before. Second, for everyone that put remarks on here like "I was thinking 30 point blowout..." - good call. Third, there probably wasn't one person on here, in Rupp Arena, in either school, and probably in the entire state that actually thought Elliott County could win this game tonight. What mattered though is that the young men in the Elliott uniforms didn't feel that way and they showed it on the court. By the 4th quarter of the game tonight, about 3/4 of the crowd was cheering for Elliott and the other 1/4th was on the Mason County end of the court. Congrats to both teams on what was probably the most exciting game of the tourney so far.

 

Now, on to some game analysis. In my opinion, Setty is the best high school player on Mason County's team. Notice I said high school, because Miller is no doubt the best college player on the team. As a player that wins at the high school level, I would take Setty. That being said, someone on Elliott's bench has to realize that Setty can flat shoot the lights out. At some point they have to address the issue of Setty's defender playing help defense and not being able to recover. I kept saying to myself, they'll sure stop helping off of Setty, but sure enough, I sat there and watched his defender help down on the post and surrender probably 6 3-pointers. Elliott had this game on ice and there's no reason why they should have lost. With a 7-point lead and 2:30 on the clock, you should never lose a high school game. Again, someone on the bench has to grasp this situation and alter the game plan a little. No adjustment was made, Elliott missed a couple of shots, Setty hit some shots, and bam, game over. Even after all of that, if Faulkner's 3-point at the 2:00-2:15 point would have fallen, I think Elliott wins the game. The third and final key observation that I have to make is Maynard. I mean really - I'll never know why Maynard didn't play more minutes. Well actually I do know, but that's neither here nor there.

 

In closing, I'll say congrats to Mason on showing some true grit. I don't think you guys will be able to handle Lexington Catholic, but I'll be cheering for you if it comes to that. As for Elliott County, basically the whole team is back next season and there is no reason why you guys shouldn't be back in Rupp for the 3rd consecutive season. Elliott could have a team capable of winning the state title next season. Most of you will probably disagree with that, but it is possible and they proved that tonight. Altogether, I'm disappointed at the loss, but very proud that they were even in a position to make me disappointed :thumb:

I'll admit, EC sure surprised me tonight. They should be able to get back to Rupp next year and possibly win some games.

Hated that I couldn't be there...but we cheered loudly from L'ville. We lost the feed the final 34 seconds--killer.

Miller is a heck of a talent but he got away with alot of stuff tonight that the refs just flat out missed. He was over the back several times on rebounds. Also, everytime he touched it in the paint it was an automatic 3-point play chance because they were going to call a foul no matter what happened.
