Does coaching require standing up, or yelling at officials or getting T's during a game? A lot on here seem to think so, but oh well, I DON'T. Coaching requires building a program, spending a TON of time working on that program, having players believe in your vision, and caring about the kids on and off the court. Not many coaches spend 27 years at a small public Class A school. Even less do that and take them to two region titles. Coach Mays has done all of this. He's a great coach, doesn't matter if some of you disagree. It doesn't change what is true.

Just because Elliott County players understand the game and have the expierence to know how to handle adverse sistutaions doesn't mean Coach Mays is a bad coach.

Miller's presence is what got Setty the shots he had. You have to be stupid to help off Setty and that is what they did. He shot the best of all the Mason players last night, but the best on the team last night is a stretch.

The first post I made in this thread said that the undoing of Elliott was helping off of Setty and allowing him to shoot. Take Setty out of the game and Mason goes home in round 1. IMO, that makes him the best player in that particular game.

I had a feeling that when Mason pulled off this comeback, they would be taking home the trophy... Just wish Elliott could have finished them off.

If you take any teams #2 player off the team during the state tourney, they will more than likely go home early.......

You also said that Setty was the best high school player on Mason's team. My point is Miller created those shots for Setty by drawing Setty's defender to him.

Setty is a great shooter, but it sure makes it nice for he & Middleton to have such a teamate that not only draws all the attention but who is so unselfish that gladly feeds them for those open looks he creates. I'm sure most any other shooter just dreams of such a situation. Hats off to Setty & Middleton for taking advantage of the situation and even more so to Miller for playing team ball & giving up his points for the good of the team.

Its a simple equation - you just don't help off of someone that shoots 50% from the 3-point line. That's all I'm saying and there's nothing there to argue about. Elliott helped off him and he hit 6 3-pointers - including 3 in the 4th quarter that led the comeback. There's nothing else to talk about. Obviously, Miller is the man and is probably getting ready to be Mr. Basketball. However, without Setty and the others, Mason doesn't win the state championship.

Would you give Miller a 100% two points, because once he got to the basket there was nothing Elliott County could do to stop him nor was there anything Elliott could do to stop him from getting to basket with just one man, or give Setty a three and let him hit one of two, if he does shoot 50%. Just to prove my point, if Setty shoots two 3's and Miller shoots two lay-ups, by the percentages your giving up 3 points by helping and 4 points by not helping. I think you have to take your chances with Setty hitting those 3's opposed to Miller shooting lay-ups, JMO. :thumb:

That's a good analysis, although Faulkner played excellent defense. I have no problem with doubling on Miller - I just say the help comes from somewhere else besides Setty's man. Especially after he hit three 3-pointers in the first half.

That's also an excellent point. The only thing that was different in this particular game is that Mason looked rattled and Elliott had them on the ropes. They just couldn't get the nails drove in the coffin.

They had the cat in the bag, but somehow the cat got out of the bag. Talked with several Mason fans after the game and they even admitted that with Elliott up 57-50 and 59-53 that they thought they were going home early. The Lions proved they could play with the best in the state and next year they bring the starting five back for another shot. Should they make it back to Rupp and have this type of game again, experience (3 state tourney games the last two years) and seasoned seniors should get them on the winning side of another game like this one. And chances are if they make it back to Rupp they will have another game like this one if they hang around long enough or get a draw similar to this year.
