They had the cat in the bag, but somehow the cat got out of the bag. Talked with several Mason fans after the game and they even admitted that with Elliott up 57-50 and 59-53 that they thought they were going home early. The Lions proved they could play with the best in the state and next year they bring the starting five back for another shot. Should they make it back to Rupp and have this type of game again, experience (3 state tourney games the last two years) and seasoned seniors should get them on the winning side of another game like this one. And chances are if they make it back to Rupp they will have another game like this one if they hang around long enough or get a draw similar to this year.

 

This team is a legitimate threat to win the state title next season, IMO.

WIREMAN--Fantastic, somebody besides me believes they are a threat to win it next year. I get the distinct feeling over the last few months that most folks outside the 16th Region didn't want to believe this team could come anywhere close to beating a top team. And I don't know why?? Maybe they don't like them for all the reasons I do like them. Small school, never much success in the past, not very tall (minus Tim Knipp), not overly athletic like Holmes, and on and on I could go. There somebody said it besides me!!!

Well, let's be honest - you look at Elliott during warmups and you think "this team can't be any good at all..." The people I was sitting around at Rupp were saying things like "looks like we'll get out of here at halftime tonight..." Well, halftime rolled around they were on their cell phones explaining to their buddies why they would be running a little late. This team has been together for a long time, they play hard, and they know how to play the game. They have alot of tournament experience and their probably isn't anyone that can stop them from getting back to Rupp. If they will schedule some tough competition and prepare properly, there's no reason why they can't be playing on Saturday in Rupp next season.

I agree with the schedule. I would hope they try to schedule some teams like Scott County, Dunbar, Manual, Ballard, Male, Holmes, Hazard, or Shelby Valley and of course get back in the 5/3 tourney. Loading up with cupcakes and going to the State Tourney with a 31-1 record will not benefit them at all. They could also play Hazard and Shelby Valley in the All A Tourney.

25-7 with a state title is much more impressive than 32-1 and a first round loss :thumb:

That's also an excellent point. The only thing that was different in this particular game is that Mason looked rattled and Elliott had them on the ropes. They just couldn't get the nails drove in the coffin.

 

Hmmm.........Rattled and on the ropes and still won the game.

Well ATown I agree, however you must have never reviewed a Elliott Co thread before because this topic has been beaten to death! 2 of the 3 reserves they had were seniors & no one else behind them will contribute more during the game or for that matter contribute more minutes next year. It is not the coaching staffs philosophy to develop reserves or play reserves. Therefore you may need to reassess your thoughts.

That's a good analysis, although Faulkner played excellent defense. I have no problem with doubling on Miller - I just say the help comes from somewhere else besides Setty's man. Especially after he hit three 3-pointers in the first half.

 

I agree that it would have been nice to get help eleswhere, but Miller is a smart player. It wasn't coincidence that he contuined to drive on Setty's side. That goes back to my orginal post, you have to play the percentages in that situtation. Don't get me wrong, Wireman, I understand what your saying as well but with Miller's athleticism it would have been hard to get help from the weak side in time to do any good. To the defense of you assesement, Wireman, this obviously didn't work either but I think that giving Miller a for sure two is worse than Setty taking a three that has a 50% chance, at best, of going in.

I seen calls missed both ways. The refs weren't ready for this level of competition.

 

I know one ref in that game has called two straight championship games. Sounds like someone thinks he's ready for that level of competition.

I'll just have to go by the game I watched. There were alot of missed calls. Either way, Mason just made the plays to win the game. End of story.
