Tyler Hansbrough to have jersey retired...

Remember the old joke: The only one who can keep Jordan under 30 points a game is Dean Smith.

And Dan Dakich. :p

Defended Michael Jordan in the 1984 NCAA basketball tournament, holding him to just 13 points in Indiana's upset of North Carolina

No I remember him and that game well. I was in college at the time and I remember how great it felt that IU pulled the upset. Then they blew it against UVA and Polynice in the Regional final.

In order to have a jersey retired at UNC you have to meet the criteria of winning one of six national player of the year awards which Hansbrough did.

As good as those other players were, none were national player of the year. Also TH is only a junior and already a member of the 2000 point club. Like him or not, respect the fact that he is a player and in elite company at UNC. I believe they even said on Sportscenter this morning that he will pass Jordan on the scoring list before the end of the year.

What kind of criteria does Kentucky have for a player's jersey to be retired? The reason I'm asking this is I noticed that North Carolina doesn't have many retired jerseys and UK has them hanging all around Rupp Arena. Are UK's requirements too lax?

I think this is a little premature. He is good but a retired jersey?

IMO he will stay and he will be UNC's all-time leading scorer. Even if he doesn't stay he's #2 on the all-time list. That's a pretty good list...

He's a very good college player, he deserves it.

I think he'll stay too. If he does, he's actually got a decent shot at beating JJ Redick's all time ACC scoring mark.

He's got 289 pts. to go to tie Phil Ford. I hope he stays, simply because I love watching him play. He epitomizes college basketball and I'm nowhere near a Tarheel fan. However, I'm a basketball fan and he is how I'd like every kid who plays for me to play. I think it's great to retire his jersey, so that every kid who comes into that gym will see what hard work and heart can get you. I don't think his perceived draft status means squat to whether or not his jersey should be retired.

If I'm not mistaken UNC retires the number as well as the jersey.

UK retires the jersey which means the number can be worn again. UK did retire the numbers of the Fabulous Five in 1950 but when the Point Shaving Scandal broke Rupp unretired the numbers.

The one plus to UNC's criteria is that it is quanitative. You make Player of the Year and you get your number retired.

UK's is much more on how the program "feels" about you. (ala the Unforgettables) I think the only criteria UK uses is that you have to have graduated. That's why Sean Woods number was taken down at one point if I remember.

Heres what I was thinking....

As much talent that comes through UNC, they better be careful if they are actually retiring numbers and not just jerseys, because they will run out of numbers eventually... They are up to 8 I believe...

I think he's very deserving of the honor but it's strange to do it if he's still on campus. I believe he'll come back for a fourth season, I just don't see him being a superstar in the pros, I expect him to be solid but not a star.

Nothing was said about him being a great player.....We tend to forget the past players who have come through programs and as far as UNC criteria who cares. The kid is a JR...let him get out of UNC bring him back and let him have his day!!! Let me say it again a JR...and did they not do MJ jersey in 85 after he left for the NBA...
