CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Tyler Hansbrough will soon take his place among a select group of North Carolina basketball greats.

 

The junior was honored as national player of the year by Sporting News on Tuesday, ensuring he will become just the eighth Tar Heel to have his number retired. When he leaves school, Hansbrough will join a list that includes Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Phil Ford on the distinguished front row of jerseys hanging from the Smith Center rafters.

Too bad they announced this AFTER the trip to Duke. The Crazies would have destroyed him about this.

I would think that Hansbrough would at best be a late 1st rounder. I think that he is maxed out on potential. NBA doesn't like that too much.

I'm not sure who he can guard in the League. Centers will be way too big; power forwards will be too strong; small forwards will be too quick. And his shot isn't good enough to play a Nowitzi-ish role.

This is a joke, all the great players that have come through NC and not had their jersey retired. In about 10-15 years down the road maybe but at this point silly.

In order to have a jersey retired at UNC you have to meet the criteria of winning one of six national player of the year awards which Hansbrough did.

 

As good as those other players were, none were national player of the year. Also TH is only a junior and already a member of the 2000 point club. Like him or not, respect the fact that he is a player and in elite company at UNC. I believe they even said on Sportscenter this morning that he will pass Jordan on the scoring list before the end of the year.

Actually I think he already has. He's got 2,000 points in 3 years and I think Jordan did not make it to 2,000. Remember the old joke: The only one who can keep Jordan under 30 points a game is Dean Smith.
