LexCath 80 Scott County 54 - 11th region semis!

Featured Replies

It goes without saying that Hicks is one of the best coaches around, but in this case he may have been better served by coaching his kids more than he worked the refs.

I have seen this ref many high school games as well as games that I have coached in 5th -8th grade. He does not put up with any criticism from coaches at all. He gives you much more respect if you coach your kids and take the good calls with the bad. Last night it probably got to the point where he had enough.

In any event, after that "T", Scott County's kids basically fell apart, getting two additional technicals. Take away the 3 technicals and this game may have gone down to the wire.

I disagree that the refs took the comeback chance away as Scott Co could have controlled their emotions.

That is where that ref should be in mid. school ball not semi of 11th region:fight:

I keep thinking about the thread that talked about the 11th vs. the Sweet Sixteen... Has there even been a competitive game in the 11th yet?[/quote

Consider the following:

Scott County over Franklin County 59-54. Tied in the last minute 1/2.

Dunbar over Madison Central 52-50 last second win.

Bryant Station over Dunbar yesterday close throughout until the last couple of minutes.

LexCath over Scott County four point game early in the 4th if I recall (then the blowout).

Sounds good. This for the other thread, but there's still no way to compare the regional tourney with the Sweet Sixteen. There are several really good teams in the 11th, though.

Scores don't tell the story. Gotta see the game to get an idea of what is happening. Dunbar-Station was close and finally had Station pulling it out. Lex Cath-Scott Co. was close for most of the 3rd and early 4th before Hick's technical foul. Either way it was good basketball being played today.

I totally disagree!

The Lexington Catholic/Scott County was sloppy from the start. Very poor guard play on both sides. Too much dribbling against the press, out of control passing, and wild shots. There was good talent on the floor, but the game was just crazy.

I also felt both coaches have coached better games. Not many adjustments, just massive substitutions and scatterbrain basketball.

If you think that was "good basketball", we agree to disagree.

You are right on here. The way to beat the 2-2-1 press is with the pass not the dribble. Scott Co tried to dribble through the press all night long, unsuccessfully.
I just found out a friend of mine spoke with one of the stat keepers who keeps track of this stat: Calls a ref makes one way or the other. The gentleman who called the technical blew his whistle 20 times and it was 16 to 4 in LC's favor.
Oh boy, I can't wait until that stat starts making it's way onto the game stats printout!

SC always dribbles through the press, I'm not saying this is the best option but the only time I have ever saw them pass through a press is this year @ Station. I think a little 3 across press breaker and not settling for contested floaters in transition would have helped out SC. The game was definately not decided by the officials, it was decided by the 19 to 1 run to start the game, inexcusable.

If I recall correctly, it was double digits before Coach Hicks called a timeout. Based on what I was seeing - a very shaky start by SC - I wouldn't have thought he would let it go past six, eight at the most. Maybe it wouldn't have made a difference.

What happened to Scott Co? I seen them play 3 or 4 times this season and I thought they had a boat load of talent.

The 19 -1 run was definately a tough start. Last year with Walls, he could dribble through any press. He could handle extremely well and was very strong with the ball. Difficult to replace a Walls, unless you do it with a Walls. Maybe little brother who will be a freshman next year will turn out to be as good. SC will be back.

SC struggled with full court presses all year. I guess they were used to Mackey and Walls just dribbling through them. Many games, they looked like they were going in reverse when a team pressed them.

I think the best 2 teams in the 11th region made it to the finals. It is a shame that so many good teams are in the 11th.

Catholic and Bryan Station will be close I think. Should be a fun game.

Jordan Smart couldn't miss tonight and the Knights had plenty of balance. I liked watching the battle between Novasel and Phares. Phares is a great player.

Smart will be a good player at Vandy. Fits right in with their style of play. Of course, Stallings may not be there. I think he will be one of the hottest coaches to move to another school after the season is over. Maybe IU?

Does anyone have a link to the Stewart over Phares Dunk? I would like to see that.

I don't believe he can play defense in their system. That will be his down fall. He is a good spot up shooter, but thats really about it.
