How does "your" school "feel" about kids playing more than one sport?

At a small school you have to have your best athletes playing multiple sports.

The schools should encourage it. Competing in high school sports, whether you win state titles or not, does not define a person it just helps to mold them, to hopefully become personally responsible young men and women. Sports is a great way to teach that along with personal accountability, goal setting, and teamwork and how ones individual actions affect other around them, both positive and negative. So the more exposure kids have to sports the more likely, IMO, these qualities will be absorbed.

Exactly what I was thinking, when you're a small school that turns up less athletes than bigger schools you can't afford to not have your athletes playing multiple sports.

I think you should encourage it no matter what size the HS is. Why not let the kids play as much as they can handle. I wish I would of played more basketball and baseball while in HS.

I agree, except in a larger HS participation in other sports may take the form of intramural leagues.

I hate limiting athletes to only one sport. However, how can one keep up if they miss football's weight training, baseball's summer and fall leagues, basketball AAU is almost year round now. Sports have become too specialized in search of the college scholarship.

It's better if a kid plays more than one sport. The sport that he/she wants to excel in and play on the next level, should be focused on more.

Knott Central has kids that are playing football/baseball, basketball/baseball, and all three. The girls have basketball, softball, and volleyball. And then, some kids are on academic teams. I know that the baseball team has a couple of guys that are on the academic team and do well in both. It's a win win situation for all if they are allowed to play different sports. Academics included.

I tell my kids all the time that they should attempt to play every sport possible. I've seen a lot kids get scholarships for sports that weren't exactly their favorite.

Most people suppor it the problem is the kid sometimes prefers one and chooses to spend more time, money, or effort in that sport and coaches of the other sports sometimes make it really tough on that.

This is a major issue at Scott County, and I think it is a problem nationwide. The major issue at hand is year round sports. Now that sports are being played year round it pretty much forces the kids to "play their cards" so to speak in regards to what sports they want to play.

At our school for example the basketball team rules the roost, they get the top athletes, will all of those top athletes have the best chance of getting a college scholarship in basketball....NO. Top tier athletes should have no problem competing in multiple sports because they are athletic and skilled enough that they dont have to play with a team the entire year to be good at what they do. On the other hand IMO it is extremely difficult for a medicore athlete to be able to compete in multiple sports. (remember I am speaking from the stance of a rather large school)

I think that the top athletes at our school would rather win championships in a sport they have no future in rather than play multiple sports where they will have medicore success (if they all participated the success wouldn't be medicore). Do I think this is right, no.....But I see it as the nature of the beast. As long as the KID is deciding what sports they play and not the coaches........

We havent had a three sport star in SC since the late 90's

:thumb: Absolutely, Especially at a small school you need all of your athletes on the field, court or wherever. What really gets me going is when a coach of one sports tells a kid not to play another one.

A high school kid should be able to play any and all sports that they want to as long as they can handle it along with the academics and their parents allow them to do so.

"Selfish Jerk" coaches should not be in that position...........Period.

:thumb: Another great post.

It really bothers me when coaches fight over athletes at small schools. By this I mean making them choose one sport over the other. "If you play that, you can't play this."
