Highlands played terrible defense and was caught standing around all night..The Birds missed more bunnies than my sons fourth grade school team...Nick definately was trying to force stuff tonight and wasn't getting any help from the refs that's for sure. Highlands rebounding effort was poor at best. Maile owned the boards for CovCath..I am extremely disappointed in the effort tonight from the Birds..........:irked::irked::irked:

No contest, CCH cruises to an easy win to get ready for the Bulldogs!

First time seeing McGraw. Definitely came away impressed.

 

McGraw was the best player on the floor. Is he a Senior? If so, is he getting any looks? Simpson is guick to the hoop, but has a bad touch. This is the first time I've seen Highlands play. They play great man-to-man D, especially on the perimeter. With the exception of McGraw, they don't really shoot very well.

 

Cov Cath felt the pressure from Highland's D, but they found a way to score, mostly within 15'. I was very impressed with the way the entire team handled the ball and the guards, although small, took the ball strong to the basket. Maile and Grimes are studs on the boards.

 

CCH is the only team in NKY that can match up Holmes, but that is going to take a much better shooting effort than they had tonight. It should be a great game. I don't mean to look past St. Henry, but CCH should have a much eaiser time getting open looks from the outside than they did tonight (look for them to light it up) and St. Henry has no answer on the inside for Maile and Grimes.

I don't know. As poorly as the Cru played tonight, I think they will play that good Monday.

Cov Cath played very well tonight. The CCH student section was awesome and are the best in the state. Looking forward to Monday night!

Cov. Cath. fan with a seat directly behind the Highlands bench. Was very impressed with Coach Schlarman. Very nice touch with the players. McGraw is a great player. Nic's shots were not falling, but considering the fact that he is coming off a substantial injury a pretty solid performance. Maile was a beast. Good to see the Colonels win even though the 3's were not falling.

Congrats to the Colonels. If no upsets occur, CovCath-Holmes should be another dandy. Best wishes to all Bird Seniors. That final game makes for a tough night. I do like the way Coach Schlarman conducts himself.

1st Quarter: The game started off as the Mitch Shover show as he scored seven of Cov. Cath’s 11 first quarter points. Luke Maile and J. D. Schmerge added the other 4 points for the Colonels. Highlands was paced by Greg Mcgraw and his 5 points. Nic Simpson and Zach Hurtt added the Bluebirds other 4 to create a 11-9 Colonel lead.

 

2nd Quarter: Highlands came out the aggressor in the second quarter as a couple of ties of the game and a 3 plus minute scoring drought highlighted the second eight minutes. Greg McGraw hit a three pointer to break the tie with 2:04 to go, but a Mitch Shover three pointer tied the game as the game went to halftime, tied at 20.

 

3rd Quarter: The scoring floodgates opened for Covington Catholic at the start of the 3rd quarter. The Colonels found this Luke Maile guy in the locker room and said can you play?? He had 8 points in the quarter including his last bucket that pushed the Colonel lead to 10 with 53.6 seconds to go in the quarter, 41-31. The Colonels would outscore the Bluebirds 21-11 in the frame to take that 41-31 lead into the final quarter.

 

4th Quarter: Highlands would not go down without a fight as Greg McGraw came to play in the last quarter. McGraw hit 12 of his 25 points in the 4th quarter including the three pointer that cut the Colonel lead to 4 points with 30.8 seconds to go. It would remain a 4 point difference when the final horn sounded as the Covington Catholic Colonels defeat the Highlands Bluebirds, 60-56.

 

Highlands ends their season with a 21-9 record. Covington Catholic will face St. Henry in the first 9th Region semi-final matchup on Monday night.

Don't mean to be contrary, but it was Michael Grimes who scored the Colonels first 7 points, not Mitch Shover.

They are from 16th Region, and if I remember correctly from another thread, all three will be going to the Sweet Sixteen.
