A lot of standing around by the guys doing the webcast too, Mark and J-Man!

 

They were literally in the student section. Did the entire broadcast standing in a corner.

 

The KRS Sports guys were stuck upstairs in a tiny corner, and I don't even know where NkySports were - perhaps upstairs in the opposite corner.

 

I'm sure that all of the broadcast crews will welcome the move to NKU next year. The sound system at Conner was horrible. They have a wonderful scoreboard which lists the players in the game, points scored, and how many fouls they have committed - nice touch. Only one problem - THEY DIDN"T USE IT - Didn't even put the invididual fouls up!!! If you are not going to fully utilize the scoreboard for the regional tournament - just when are they going to use it????

 

I was tucked away in a hole UNDERNEATH the Crazies. At times, wondering if the bleachers would hold up. BOK Center can't get here soon enough.

What a game last night. I for one thought Highlands would win this one, so congrats to the Coloneles for their victory.

 

For Highlands Mcgraw and Eaton played great game. While Mcgraw's shooting percentage wasn't that high, he got big buckets for the Birds when they needed them. Eaton was just in the right place at the right time all night long.

 

As I stated when everyone got excited about Simpson returning, that his poor shot selection and turnovers would hurt Highlands, it did last night. He had probably 5 turnovers and forced up many shots. IMO they should have used Mcgraw a lot earlier.

 

Now to Covcath:

 

Man were those crazies out in full force. It truly is a fun thing to see when they have everyone out. The "Arrez. give us a sign" (

 

Maile and Grimes both played great last night. As I said after the Holmes/CCH game, Maile is a man on the boards. If he went up, he was getting it and putting it back in. Nobody could jump with him. He's a very strong kid down low.

 

Grimes hit a lot of key jumpers in the first half and the second.

 

I think Listerman was smart when he tried to press and then called it off right away when Highlands got two easy baskets back to back off of it. One thing's for sure, Highlands does a great job at handling the press.

 

All in all, a great high school game, with a great atmosphere. Standing room only last night. I look to see the Colonels in the finals come Tues.

 

For Highlands, keep your heads up. You had a great season and have nothing to be ashamed of. Mcgraw is one hell of a player and I hope to see him continue his career on the college hardwood.

Oh thanks for clearing that up. It kind of sounded like that from where I was sitting. I wasn't the only one who thought they were saying that though.

Congrats to the Colonels! Thought that HHS would get this one. Good luck the rest of the way. Looking forward to watching a war on ICN 6. Birds, thanks for a fun year to follow! Good luck to the seniors.

Colonels prevail in rivalry rematch with Bluebirds

 

Covington Catholic basketball player Luke Maile did postgame interviews with an inch-long gash on his chin, opening up like a second mouth. A few feet away, coach Mike Listerman chatted up the media, his sweaty hair matted across the top of his forehead.

 

"I think I might need a stitch or two," Maile said. "To tell you the truth, I don't even know where it came from."

 

Wins in the CovCath-Highlands rough-and-tumble rivalry don't typically come easily, and Wednesday night was no exception.

The refs were pretty lame for both. Once again, they were "ticky-tack" out top and let actual beatings take place underneath. The lady ref was poor underneath, better out top. The two white haired gentlemen were just poor. Chappie and his seeing eye dog would have done a much better game (lol). But they in no way won/lost this game. Selfish play cost the Birds. (why the coach didn't sit selfish players and explain the teamwork concept is beyond me.) The big difference that I noticed was HHS was missing layup/close shots that were contested...CovCath was missing open looks from point blank range. Credit Coach L for running and the kids for executing a nice spread half court offense. Sophs got invaluable experience that should bode well for the Birds future. Kudos to the kids on both sides for behaving themselves this time. (fans). Time for horsehide and pigskin in Ft. Thomas!

The lady ref did not make many calls and she saw the holding violations outside the circle quite well. She ignored quite a few inside fouls and Simpson was buffeted around quite a bit on drives to the basket amd could not get a call the first half. While he did not drive and dish the way he is capable of, I don't think the HHS forwards did much of a job making themselves available for the pass either.

I thought the first out of bounds call was strange as CCH knocked it out and 2 officials indicated it was Highlands ball. A CCH player grabbed the ball and started to throw it in and no amount of protest could persuade the officials to give the ball back to HHS.

McGraws back makes him a high risk recruit. His skills are certainly not in question. The CCH game plan was designed to stop him after he got by his man (you have to play him close because of his quick three pointer) and they swarmed him when he drove, however, he dished to open team mates who could not finish from point blank.

I live next door to the Grimes boy's grandfather. I am glad that the post about Shover's early production was cleared up. I did not want to see my neighbor commit mayhem on a poster (just kidding).

Because it was the horses that brought them to the show apparently. I thought a simple minute on the bench where an assistant coach squats down in front of the player and emphasizes those things would have sufficed.

 

On the refs, they didnt cost anybody the game but they could have been a little bit more consistent with what they were going to call and what they were'nt. I thought calling Kowolonek on the 5th foul was LAME. They were allowing hand checking all night long and then midway through the 4th your going to send someone to the bench for it?

I was on the floor on Highlands end in the first half and some of those drives just didn't have anything to call. The defensive player has a right to his space, if the offensive player tries to muscle him out then there will be contact. Doesn't necessarily mean there is a foul. I thought she was be far the strongest of the three officials!:thumb:

That was a blown call as Granpappy out front kicked his foot up and directed his arm toward Highlands possession. Then they just let the smart CCH player who acted like it was his the whole time just inbound the ball. Meanwhile, Willie was having a kinipshinfit on the sideline.

 

Bottom line, if Highlands hits their bunnies and gets a few calls in the 1st half they could have maybe had a 4-6 point lead going into the half. Not to mention, they had the ball with 30 seconds left in the half and they decided it was better to try and score then rather than hold the ball for the last shot. I dont know if that was drawn up or just a poor decision by the players involved. How about a weave out front and isolate either McGraw or Simpson with 6 ticks left. Could have been a huge momentum swing but ended up giving CCH a shot at going up with HHS on their heels. Simpson did make a nice attempt from 60 feet that almost went in and would have rocked the house.

I thought the tall gray haired guy was the best. He made the difficult calls. The woman made the obvious calls. The other short fella just looked happy to be there.
