February 19, 200818 yr Author Did not get in...What an utter and complete joke. Shame on the people who vote for this part of the Hall of Fame..One of the 20 is Marty Brennaman. Let's face it there was tough competiition, and I'm sure the guy who won is very good!
February 19, 200818 yr One of the 20 is Marty Brennaman. Let's face it there was tough competiition, and I'm sure the guy who won is very good! The guy who won is famous for his "Get out the rye bread and mustard, Grandma....IT'S GRAND SALAMI TIME!!!" :irked:
February 19, 200818 yr The guy who won is famous for his "Get out the rye bread and mustard, Grandma....IT'S GRAND SALAMI TIME!!!" :irked: Oh, yeah, and "Fly, Fly Away"....on a "regular" homer.
February 19, 200818 yr Did not get in...What an utter and complete joke. Shame on the people who vote for this part of the Hall of Fame..This is absolutely pathetic. The man deserves to be in there, not only for his legendary broadcasting career, but for his historical significance to the game itself! Absolutely pathetic choice! :irked:
February 19, 200818 yr Author First of all, I never said it was a travesty, so not sure how that got there. Second, those that are really mad need to be a little less short sighted. Nuxhall was amazing and of course meant a lot to the game of baseball but to say he was the only good choice is, at the very very least not fair. Read this article, this guy is to Seattle what Marty and Joe are to Cincinnati. Hard to fault the panel for picking him.
February 19, 200818 yr Author Here's a quote from it... Entering the 2008 season, Niehaus has broadcast 4,817 of the 4,899 Mariners games played, missing just 82 contests in the team's 31-year history. As one of the first two inductees to the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame in 2000, he is also a member of the Puget Sound Sports Hall of Fame. In 2004, Niehaus was named Washington State Broadcaster of the Year by the Washington State Association of Broadcasters, having also earned Sportscaster of the Year honors for Washington in 1995 and 1996 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. "Dave Niehaus is the heartbeat of Mariners baseball. Since Day One, he has painted a picture of baseball and summer in Seattle better than anyone ever has," said Dale Petroskey, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. "Every Mariners fan knows his style and signature calls such as 'My, Oh My!' and 'It Will Fly Away!' By virtue of his talent, dedication, and professionalism, he has earned his rightful place among the elite broadcasters in baseball history in receiving the 2008 Ford C. Frick Award. We are looking forward to welcoming Dave and his family in Cooperstown this summer." Named one the "Top 10 Most Influential People of the Century" by The Seattle Times, Niehaus threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the inaugural game at Safeco Field on July 15, 1999.
February 19, 200818 yr Author I am going to say that this panel that selected Mr. Niehaus knows what they're talking about... A 19-member electorate, comprised of the 14 living Frick Award recipients and five broadcast historians/columnists, includes Frick honorees Marty Brennaman, Jerry Coleman, Gene Elston, Joe Garagiola, Ernie Harwell, Jaime Jarrin, Milo Hamilton, Harry Kalas, 2007 Frick Award winner Denny Matthews, Felo Ramirez, Vin Scully, Lon Simmons, Bob Uecker and Bob Wolff, and, historians/columnists Bob Costas (NBC), Barry Horn (Dallas Morning News), Stan Isaacs (formerly of New York Newsday), Ted Patterson (historian) and Curt Smith(historian).
February 19, 200818 yr I loved Joe but I'm not sure if HOF is his destiny. It would make a great story but I'm not thinking there was an injustice done.
