Highlands Baseball

As I've always said, Mike Johnson is a super person and I expected nothing but this best from him. I can tell you that he really likes coaching there at Highlands.

Sounds like basebal at Highlands is really making some positive strides. Must be the coaching. : )

I think some people are missing a big point: the kids not playing baseball would RATHER play Spring football. And there is nothing wrong with that. I understand the frustration of baseball enthusiasts, but heck, there have been more than a few good athletes each year that choose to concentrate on sports other than football. I was disappointed, but heck it was their choice, so I accepted it and moved on. Contrary to what some people think or try to portray, no one and I mean no one is holding a gun to their heads and saying they have to play football and can't play baseball. These kids as many well know have been saying since a tender age they want to win State in Football. The incoming seniors want to win two in a row and the incoming juniors want to win three in a row, and frankly, they have a good shot of making that happen. If they decide to not play baseball to try and make that happen by participating in Spring football, who are we to judge them or question their motives.

I along with many more wish he(they) missed it as much also. I don't know about forcing, but encouraging may be the right word. Highlands isn't in the position to have top qaulity athletes not playing multiple sports because they want to concentrate on one because they feel they will be left behind on the field if they don't participate in other sports. HHS just doesn't have the numbers. It's just not true for the boys I'm talking about. It doesn't matter if they are in an extra 10 spring practices for them to progress to the next level. They are just that gifted and good for them. You may not agree with me but that's my opinion.

I've been told before over and over that HHS wished there wasn't spring ball, because it does just that, takes away from spring sports, but they are not going to not participate if it's available either. I guess in time, parents and kids will figure it out.

For most of them, it has nothing to do with playing at the next level. Its doing whatever they can to improve their chances of winning state this Fall. And you can deny it all you want, but participating in Spring football will improve even the gifted ones. If we put in a new offense, and I'll bet a dollar to a donut we will, by participating in Spring football they will be much farther ahead come two a days than if they miss Spring football.

But we need to keep one important thing in mind: they can do both if they want to. Mueller and Johnson have done a good job coordinating the practices the last couple of years. But the bottom line as hard as it is for some to comprehend, some kids just would rather concentrate on football.

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him during a few games last year, he seems like a great coach to play for and a good role model for the boys.

I am not sure I would trust "your" evaluation of who a good role model is...:D;)

You are exactly correct, but you can't do all three. And it's the third that is the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little trivia ? Who was the last 3 sport star at HHS????

If the third is track, you are probably right. Then again, have there been many athletes over the years that did baseball and track? I'm sure if I rack my simple mind I could come up with one or two, but off of the top of my head, I can't think of any.

I have a son that I think could help the track team in field events. I hope he decides to do it. Then again, if he decides he'd rather not to concentrate on football, I'll accept it as his decision and move on down the line. If that's what he enjoys and wants to concentrate on, so be it. I've never been one that felt unless you played multiple sports who were missing out on life.

I think you are right. The coaching on the varsity and JV level have played a major role, no make that the key role in the turn around. A huge tip of my hat for making that happen.:thumb:

I was thinking Derek Smith but after your reply you maybe right!!!
What does Derek Smith have to do with Baseball. He could of or should i say would of lifted during Baseball if he thought that it might of helped him at the next level. But we're talking about someone who thought his talent would get him by alone. So in your kids situation and we're not talking about whether the football coach can see if your kid fits a certain position or not. That might be okay for a imcoming sophmore or junior who didn't see the field much last year. But we're talking about your kid along with some pretty sure thing starters. Dale already knows where these kids are going to play next year. Does spring football help, sure it does. It's a no-brainer!!!! But until your kid along with the other group of football player that already know their future at Highlands stand up and say We're playing baseball!!!!! this topic is never going away.

Maybe I'm to blame. I've used Derek as a reason to work hard at the things you want to become. I saw a special athlete in Derek and what happens when you don't work yourself to the fullest. Now I got a son that lifts and runs with the football team for three hrs. M-W-F and usually stays another hr. with a few others.

You are not to blame!!!!! Your kids are interested in working hard and getting the job done!!!!! No blame to that. Sounds like the boys are lead by example. You should be fortunate that we are having this discussion about all the good things they do.:thumb:
