When I was in 5th grade, we were playing a game against a team from the other end of the county. There was one woman there who was harassing the ref. WAY TOO MUCH. After one of the many loud comments that she made, the ref. blew the whistle, stopped everyone and turned to the woman. He took off his whistle and then said loud enough for all to hear, "Lady, if you know so much about basketball, you get out here and do it! If not, sit down, shut up, and let me do my job!" Needless to say, the red-faces woman didn't say another word.

 

As a side note, it was later discovered that she didn't have a child there. She wasn't a mother to any player or cheerleader, she just decided to show up!

One I had never heard before...."he didn't do anything, why is that a foul?" The guy next to the lady says "It wasn't a foul it was a 5 sec call" She says "what makes that 5 sec?" and the ref turns around to the guy and says go got her some more popcorn...

I refereed a game this summer and the player REQUESTED of me that I throw her parents out of the game.

Certainly uncalled for but on top of that very unprofessional from an Athletic Director who apparently can't control his comments. Doesn't shed much positive light on the school for which he represents. And on top of that, someone told me the boys coach at that school had to get on the A.D. for yelling things from the stands. I wasn't at the game but heard it from several sources. What's with that!?

That's completely out of line, if true.

One of my favorites to use after the ref has called a foul "...it was an accident she/he didn't mean to do it.." This usually will get a smile from the ref.

What about fans yelling "5 seconds" when the defensive player is not even close enough to the offensive player to even warrant a count from the official... I mean literally the defense was in a 2-3 zone and the point guard was holding the ball out front waiting for a last second shot, at least 6-7 feet away from the defender and this guy yells "Come on ref, that's 5 seconds"

And many times officials don't do this correctly. If you are standing on the free throw line and the ball is at the top of the key, the official should be counting. Many times, they expect you to be closer than what is required by the rules.

You are right...some officials dont apply this rule correctly. It penalizes the defense if you force them to get right up in a dribblers face to get a closely guarded count. A great advantage is gained by the offense on such plays.

A closely guarded count shall be terminated when the offensive player in control of the ball gets his/her head and shoulders past the defensive player".

I also lost an argument with another about traveling while inbounding the ball. I was told that after a turnover, the player inbounding could not move an established pivot foot while inbounding. I also witnessed a 3 sec lane violation called on an under the basket inbounds play. All 9th region officials:irked:
