Some fans yell the dumbest things

Featured Replies

Drives me nuts when I hear people yelling at a point guard to "pass the ball" or "terrible pass" over & over in a game. I have heard this yelled at many point guards...usually when the player they are there watching is on the receiving end!

Usually means that when they yell "pass the ball" they think their "player" is open...who is. But I know, the point guard, the coach and everyone else in the gym knows cannot finish. Everyone knows but the person yelling at the point guard to pass the ball!

Yep and the same people are the ones that yell "terrible pass." Someday I am going to break & yell "catch the ball"!

It drives me crazy when parents yell at their kids to "put it in the hole" or "catch the ball" or anything like that. It is not like they are trying to miss their shots or not catch the ball on purpose and I am sure having mom or dad yell at them is not helping.

Another pet pieve is when the opponents fans clap when the other team makes a mistake due in no part to what their team did. A girl from the other team makes a bad pass and throws the ball out of bounds and the other teams fans applaude wildly like their team just did something great. Just goes right thru me.

In another thread I saw a couple of references to dumb things yelled from the stands and thought it would make an entertaing thread. What are the stupidest things that you have heard yelled from the stands this year? Whether mis-informed things yelled at refs or parents yelling at the kids.

I heard a fan screaming for a three second call against a player when they took 4 consecutive shots from the paint.

Also heard a mother yell at her daughter that if she didn't stop playing with her hair that she was going to shave her bald.

This one's the worst. Then there is the fan yelling for the 3 second call who says "he's had a foot in the lane for 10 seconds, ref!"

Here was a new one for me. At one game a fan kept getting mad that an official called a time out when a coach was asking for it. Her point guard was in trouble with the half court press. A guy in the stands behind me actually yelled out "You always give her a time out, ref!" Well, yes, each team has five and if they have possession of the ball they can have a time out.

I love the fans that yell at the clock keeper and have no idea how the timing is supposed to go. For example, the inbounder makes a long pass that goes out of bounds and no one touches it. "The clock didn't start! Hey ref, the clock didn't start!" Well, yes, thank you for noticing! It isn't supposed to. "Fans" don't realize, also, that the clock keeper doesn't make the decision to start or stop the clock. The official does. He/she must watch the officials hand to start the clock, regardless of what happens on the floor.

Absolutely tacky. Like clapping when the other team misses a foul shot. Ugh.

Sometimes when I would be yelling for (as opposed to at) my twins, I'd get them mixed up and yell the wrong name. I knew who I was talking to, I'd just say the wrong name. Worse than that, sometimes I would be so into the game, I wouldn't even realize I yelled the wrong name and the other mom's would point it out! I know, I know, it is embarrassing.

are you trying to be funny? There are no player control fouls on the offensive end anymore. All offensive fouls result in a non-bonus shooting violation.

Maybe you are the one I keep hearing yell?

UH, What? No player control? I hope you just worded that wrong.

So A1 shoots the ball. While the ball is in the air, A2 shoves B2 under the basket. Are you saying that there would be no bonus FT awarded if team A had 7 or more fouls?

Are you also saying that if B2 went for the rebound, tipped it, but while tipping it A2 shoved him that there would be no bonus FTs awarded?

I think he's saying that if A1 commits a player control foul on B1 and the foul is Team A's 8th team foul, B1 would not shoot the bonus. I think that is what he's trying to say. The 1st scenerio above wouldn't be a player control foul. This is a topic we recently discussed at our local association meeting. I could be wrong but I think that this is what he talking about when he says player control fouls are not rewarded with the bonus.

I hate to hear......"Over the back, He's over his back!!!!!". I wish people would say "He's pushing him" because that would be the correct term. Watch the officials report the foul, you shouldn't ever see an official say " Foul...Red #32.....Over the Back". The rulebook says it is a push and nothing about over the back.

Also, if a player dives for the ball and slides on his/her butt the 1st thing you hear is "He traveled" or "Walk!!!" but actually no violation has occurred.

I could go on and on about some of the dumb things fans say. LOL!! The funniest ones are the older ladies who think they know how to coach AND officiate. They think they can see everything and the official is blind. It's hilarious some of the things that come out of their mouth.

Not sure what you mean by yor last example - but here is what happens. Used to be that a player control foul resulted in no bonus being shot, but the rest of the offensive fouls (i.e. illegal screens, etc.) did result in a bonus being shot. Now the rule states that all fouls committed by the offense are non-bonus shooting fouls. Yes, they still have to be the offense which means they have to be in posession of the ball, but if they are and they commit a foul, no one will be shooting the bonus.

Team Control.

I sometimes wish all fans were put in a bubble so that no one could hear them. I'm rarely very boisterous or loud when it comes to games mainly because unless I think a foul is blatantly obvious and missed then I don't think there is much reason to continually keep yelling at someone. Fact is, you aren't changing someone's mind about a call or no-call and unless the thing you are yelling about it blatantly obvious and occurring quite frequently such as a player camping in the lane with no intention of leaving then the ref probably won't be inclined to make calls later.

I may criticize reffing but the fact is that having been a soccer ref when I was 13 for under 8 soccer I know how horrible fans can be. You haven't experienced horrible until you ref soccer for a bunch of kids and have to listen to every know it all parent who thinks their child is the next big thing tell you that every call you make or don't make is wrong.

I find that there are two types of loud fans when it comes to yelling at refs. Ones that know nothing about what they are yelling about but having overheard someone else say it near them feel it is their duty to then simply inform everyone of that opinion. Or there is the fan who simply feels that the refs are against their team and will not call anything for their team or against the other team. Any other loud fans might be obnoxious but are typically just that way because they are cheering for their team.

I heard someone yell "you are a good ref"

Just kidding..I did hear someone offer their bifocals to the ref.

I was told about a coach doing this once. I believe he got t'd up for it but it would have been very funny.

I also witnessed a step dad of one of the premier players in the late 90's stand along the line and scream and yell at his step daughter, the ref's and the coaches. She would be looking at him and back at the coach. The coach was yelling one play and her dad yelling another. The poor girl was so shook up after each game. I bet she kept Tums in business.

The best lines of all times has to come from a dear lady that has passed on. I thought the world of this woman. I truly miss her dearly. Helen was her name. I don't know if I'm permitted to post a last name. I would never post anything negative of this ole' gal. Anyone from East that posts on here remembers her well. You had to feel sorry at times for the refs. She sure could let them have it.

The irony of these two is that Helen once told this father he needed to settle down.:lol::lol: Boy I sure miss that lady.

I love the screaming about the 3 second lane, a hard rule for some to grasp!
