Limbaugh advertises for them. He tries everyday to fit these things into his conversations...
Well, you know how it is. It's a tankless job; but somebody has to do it.

The initial costs are substantial, from what I have been told.

Maybe some plumbers out there can shed some light on the installation costs associated with going tankless.

From my understanding, the cost is in the installation of a vent, and possibly a larger gas line depending on the size of the unit.

I've heard mixed reviews on tankless systems. One of the negatives is that you cannot run multiple appliances at once and expect to have hot water for a shower or to just wash your hands/dishes. My parents looked into buying one when they built their house, and they opted not to. They did go with geothermal for the heat.

ttt. Any others with experience out there. I have an old water heater and would like to go tankless if possible. Would love to hear some other opinions.

Years ago they were expensive due to the air/vent pipes that needed to be run. $100 a foot, so mine would have been a grand just for the vent. Heard now they can use PVC. Downside is a loss of water pressure of about 15%. Buddy of mine with 5 kids has one and swears by it. Says all 5 teenagers plus mom and dad all get hot showers.

Buddy of mine has a portable one for the farm. Really small but it takes the chill off of the water.

I'm considering it when this water heater is retired.

Dug this thread up. Has anyone went to one over the years?

My folks have one at their place in Arizona and it's incredible. Works great and they've never had problems running multiple sources.

However, I've been told by people I trust that installing one in the Louisville area is trouble because the high amounts of natural lime in the water cause serious problems with buildup in the unit. Don't know how much that holds true in the rest of the state. Anyone hear something similar?

I see where they have electric ones. Do they need vented?

I'd say that holds true for most f that state. I have read that KY has some of the "hardest" water around. I would bet a water softener system would be recommended with these systems where hard water is a problem.

Nope! Never thought of that, but my guess it might be expensive to run?
